What is blood pressure and when can it become dangerous ">

Our blood pressure is subject to natural fluctuations in the normal daily routine. So he does not always stay on a level. If we get stressed or if the body is expected to do a strenuous job or to do more sport, it starts to rise sharply. But this is a good thing, as it supports the heart and better blood circulation to the muscles, providing them with oxygen. As soon as we relax, the blood pressure drops again. But there is also the abnormally high blood pressure, which is estimated to affect every second person after the age of 65. This must be controlled and monitored. If your blood pressure is still within the normal range, you can see from the attached blood pressure chart.

Blood pressure - definition

When people talk about blood pressure, everyone knows immediately that it can be too high or too low. But what is blood pressure really, what happens in our body?

Blood pressure is controlled by a very sophisticated system of nerve and vascular actions in conjunction with hormones. For example, the autonomic nervous system, and the sympathetic nervous system, are responsible for increasing the sequence and strength of the heartbeat when needed, such as when we are under stress or doing strenuous, physical work. At the same time, however, the small blood vessels are narrowed and so the blood pressure increases within seconds. In contrast, there is the parasympathetic, which should lower the blood pressure again. The hormones needed to regulate blood pressure are produced in the adrenal gland, kidney and sympathetic nerve fibers. Thus, renin is channeled by the kidneys into the blood, which is supposed to help the vasoconstrictive hormone angiotensin. In the kidney, however, the blood pressure-increasing adrenaline is produced and released. At the main artery and the carotid artery are so-called sensors, which are supposed to regulate the height of the blood pressure. However, this interaction and the hormone balance is disturbed, it comes to hypertension, but rarely also to low blood pressure.

Tip: Anyone who suffers from high blood pressure should seek medical treatment and not take it lightly. By contrast, low blood pressure is often extremely uncomfortable, but it does not need to be treated.

High blood pressure (hypertension)

Hypertension can already be described as a folk ailment, since it is estimated that every second German over the age of 65 already suffers from it. Overall, the estimates come to about 20 million Germans in total. However, as not every patient with high blood pressure goes to the doctor, these are not reliable figures. Because just at the beginning there are no problems with the increased blood pressure, it is often not noticed. Therefore, it is even more important to regularly check his blood pressure. Pharmacies also offer the possibility for this. But at home, too, there are the blood pressure monitors for the wrist, which can help to check the blood pressure in the long term. However, these do not replace the blood pressure measurements at the doctor. From a value of 140/90 mmHg and above, doctors speak of hypertension. However, the following symptoms may indicate increased blood pressure:

  • dizziness
  • a headache
  • Shortness of breath in stressful situations
  • nervousness
  • / -Stolpern palpitations
  • sleep disorders

Hint: The good news is that since 2008, the number of patients has almost doubled, returning to normal blood pressure after treatment for their arterial hypertension.

Low blood pressure (hypotension)

Low blood pressure usually occurs at a young age or in very old people. Teenagers in puberty often suffer from this. But low blood pressure is less common than high blood pressure. In contrast to hypertension, a permanently low blood pressure is not dangerous but for the person concerned usually only unpleasant. Avoid low blood pressure:

  • getting up quickly from sitting or lying down
  • fast bending over
  • rapid change of body position in an upright posture

In these cases, the blood pressure can drop sharply. If the circulation does not control quickly, symptoms such as tinnitus, headache, frequent dizziness, and sometimes brief blackness may appear in front of the eyes. In the worst but also the rarest case, it can lead to a collapse.

Measure blood pressure

When the blood pressure is to be measured, the doctor puts a cuff around the right arm. For this the arm on the heart side is never used, because otherwise wrong values would arise. The cuff is inflated, which seems a little uncomfortable for some patients. If enough pressure is built up, the doctor releases the pump and the pressure escapes from the cuff. Now begins the actual measurement process, where the following happens:

  • the noises in the artery are measured
  • due to the decreasing pressure on the cuff, a pulse wave is produced
  • because the cuff now lets more blood through again
  • the pulse wave becomes audible and measurable in the blood flowing through
  • Blood pressure measurement is ready when the noise disappears again
  • this is the case when the artery is completely permeable again

It is important to measure blood pressure regularly over a longer period of time. Only then can it be determined whether the value is constantly in the normal range or high range, or perhaps extremely fluctuates. A single measurement every few months says nothing here. It may also be that a patient is excited and nervous at the doctor's visit and the blood pressure for these reasons increases briefly. And even if you have supposedly a normal blood pressure, you should check it regularly.

Systolic (mmHg)Diastolic (mmHg)
Low blood pressure<105<65
Optimal blood pressure<120<80
Normal blood pressure120 - 12980 - 84
High normal blood pressure130-13985-89
Mild hypertension (Level 1)140 - 15990 - 99
Medium Hypertension (Level 2)160 - 179100-109
Severe hypertension (Level 3)> = 180> = 110
Isolated systolic hypertension> = 140<90

Tip: In a healthy person, the blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg. Here, the first number indicates the systolic pressure, the diastolic pressure is indicated by the second number.

Systolic / Diastolic pressure

When the doctor talks about systolic pressure, he means the ejection phase of the heart. Here, the left ventricle contracts and pumps the blood into the aorta. At the same time, the blood is pumped from the right ventricle into the pulmonary circulation. At this point in the pumping process, systolic pressure is highest. The opposite is the diastolic pressure. This is the phase of relaxation of the heart chambers. As the chambers expand to allow new blood to enter, this pressure is in its lowest phase.
