Greening the garage roof - instructions and tips for green roofs

A garage roof can sometimes be much more than a simple roof. Have you ever thought of beautifying it with plants ">

Greening the garage roof

To protect the roof construction a greening is suitable. As part of the renovation, the old greenery was removed. In this guide, we show you how to renew a garage roof and apply new roofing felt: renew the garage roof

For a green roof you need the following materials:

  • Root Barrier
  • Seed mixture or plants
  • substratum
  • Dränageplatten
  • gravel
  • scissors
  • filter fabric
  • rake
  • protection fleece
  • watering Can
  • bucket

Step 1: Set up a plan. When planting greenery, it is important to pay attention to the strain on the plants and the mats. Make sure the construction is able to support the weight.

Tip: Keep in mind that the material will be soaked up by rain and gain significantly in weight. As a guideline, the garage roof must carry around 100 kilograms per square meter in addition to the existing load. If the stability is not given, then additional support measures must be carried out.

Also pay attention to the correct inclination. The permissible angle is between 0 and 5 degrees. If it is a steeper roof, then you must also take appropriate measures.

Step 2: Make sure the roof is not leaking. The greening may only be applied after checking the tightness or the renovation carried out previously.

Step 3: Observe safety regulations:

  • Even if the height is lower than when working on the rooftop, you should not underestimate the consequences of a crash.
  • Working very carefully at all points.
  • Secure yourself and the ascent aids.
  • Lying tools or left-behind materials can become a trip hazard.
  • Do not overload individual areas too much and avoid mechanical damage to the surface.

Step 4: Thoroughly sweep the garage roof. Sharp-edged stones should be removed as well as remnants of the previous refurbishment steps.

Tip: Sharp-edged objects can damage the root protection foil. This in turn serves to prevent the penetration of the roots in the area of the roof seal.

Step 5: Now spread the root protection foil. Make sure that the film protrudes evenly on the sides. If several slides are required, the individual areas should overlap by around 1.5 meters.

Tip: Make sure the film does not curl or wrinkle.

Step 6: Cut the roof drain free. This must not be covered by the foil to maintain its function.

Step 7: Now you have to apply a protective fleece to the root protection foil. Start on the long side of the roof and roll out the tracks. Lay the individual sheets with an overlap of about 10 centimeters. Here again, cut open the exhaust air opening and pay attention to a smooth surface.

Step 8: Lay the drainage plates in this step. The plates serve to absorb water and assist in the seepage of the substrate. Let the plates overlap by about 5 to 10 centimeters. Finally, cut the drain hole free.

Tip: The plates have two different sides. The side lying on top is marked and has drainage slots.

Step 9: Attach the filter fabric in the last preparation step . This prevents fines from entering the plates. The overlap should be around 10 centimeters and after execution, the drain hole must be cut free again in this case.

Step 10: Around the drain you have to make a gravel pile. The width of the gravel strip should be around 30 to 50 centimeters. The gravel must have a grain size of 16-32 or 16-22.

Step 11: Attach the substrate and insert the plants

Before you can use the plants, you have to deploy the substrate. This is offered in bags and is a special and lean substrate. It is particularly suitable for extensive greening. The plants must be undemanding and thrive on poor soils. The substrate is mixed with various admixtures, such as pumice or lava rock. Distribute all sacks evenly on the roof and then cut them up. Spread the material evenly over the surface using a rake. Then level the substrate surface.

Tip: The ideal thickness of the view is around 6 to 8 centimeters. To achieve this, about 70 liters of substrate per square meter are necessary.

Step 12: Now cut the filter fabric to its final shape. For this purpose, it is cut off just above the gravel surface or the substrate surface.

Step 13: Sow the plants.

Sedum plants, for example, are particularly suitable for this purpose. These are thick-leafed plants, which manage with little water and have good storage properties. But also herbs and spices are suitable. After sowing, you must water thoroughly to stimulate growth.

Costs for green roofs

The prices for the roof greening depend on the roof size and the selected plants. A complete set gives you all the elements you need in one package. The costs per square meter amount to around 35 to 40 euros. However, the costs can often be reduced by purchasing a large quantity, so nothing stands in the way of the "garage roof greening" project.
