Since time immemorial, the owl has a very special place in mythology. It is considered a symbol of knowledge and wisdom and is therefore often depicted with a doctor's hat and talar. But only at night actively surrounds the owl but also a mysterious aura. Whatever fascinates us about the animal, today the owl is a very popular symbol in the decoration as well as in the decoration area. It follows the instructions for a crocheted, wild owl, which can be used as a decorative figure or as a cuddly pillow.

Shopping list for a crochet owl about 30 cm high

Wool, which can be crocheted with needle size 4.5 in the following colors:

  • Apple green (1 ball)
  • Rusty red (1 ball)
  • Turquoise (1 ball)
  • Kiwi (2 balls)
  • Beige (1 ball)

The pattern owl is made of: Lang Yarns, Nelly (60% cotton, 40% polyacrylic).

If you work with a thinner wool and smaller needles, you get in the end result, a correspondingly smaller owl.

General: The owl is crocheted in solid mesh throughout. Rows each begin with a transitional air mesh. Rounds also start with a transitional mesh and end with a chain stitch. When changing colors, crochet the transitional air mesh with the new color.

Crochet owl's body

For the body with the apple green wool, first cast on a chain of 25 pieces of air. Crochet a spiral air stitch and crochet 25 stitches along the chain of stitches.

Crochet a total of 4 stitches at the end of the row for later rounding into the last stitch.

Crochet 25 stitches back along the bottom of the chain and crochet 4 stitches in the last stitch. Close this first round with a slit stitch (round 1 = total of 58 stitches). Cut the thread and pull it through the chain stitch.

Crochet 2 rounds each in apple green, rust red, turquoise, kiwi, beige and crochet this strip sequence as described.

ATTENTION: The beginning of the lap is offset. Each round begins and ends now on the right edge of the work (first round stitch is the previously crocheted third stitch). Crochet a transitional mesh in rust red and work the round as follows: crochet 2 stitches in the first two stitches, crochet 25 stitches, crochet 2 stitches into the following 4 stitches (left edge), crochet 25 stitches, 2 stitches in each row crochet both loops of the round (round 2 = total of 66 stitches).

Round 3: 4 stitches in total, double the 1st, 33rd, 34th and 66th stitches (= 70 stitches in total).

Round 4: change color (turquoise); total 4 stitches, doubling the 1st, 35th, 36th and 70th stitches (= 74 stitches in total).

Round 5: total 4 stitches, doubling the 1st, 37th, 38th and 74th sts (= 78 stitches in total).

Round 6: Change color (Kiwi); total 4 stitches, double the 1st, 39th, 40th and 78th stitches (= 82 stitches in total).

Round 7: Crochet without increasing (= 82 stitches in total).

Round 8: change color (beige); total 4 stitches, doubling the 1st, 41st, 42nd and 82st stitches (= total of 86 stitches).

Round 9: Crochet without increasing (= total of 86 stitches).

Round 10: change color (apple green); total 4 stitches, doubling the 1st, 43rd, 44th and 86th stitches (= 90 stitches in total).

Round 11: Crochet with no increases (= 90 stitches in total).

Round 12 to 34: Crochet in the strip sequence without increasing. On lap 34, make a mark left and right (before the 1st and after 45 stitches). From now on the body goes over into the head area. The marker separates the front and rear area.

Round 35: front area - 10 mesh turquoise, 4 mesh kiwi, 17 mesh turquoise, 4 mesh kiwi, crochet 10 mesh turquoise. Starting from the mark, start the back area - 16 stitches turquoise, 13 stitches kiwi, 16 stitches turquoise crochet.

Tip: When changing colors within a row, the last stitch already cut with the new color! Run the unused paint on the back.

Round 36: front area - 9 mesh turquoise, 6 mesh kiwi, 15 mesh turquoise, 6 mesh kiwi, 9 mesh turquoise crochet. Back area - Crochet 10 mesh turquoise, 25 mesh kiwi, 10 mesh turquoise.

Round 37: front section - 7 mesh turquoise, 10 mesh kiwi, 11 mesh turquoise, 10 mesh kiwi, 7 mesh turquoise crochet. Back area - Crochet 7 mesh turquoise, 31 mesh kiwi, 7 mesh turquoise.

Round 38: Front Area - Crochet 6 mesh turquoise (cut off 1st and 2nd stitch together), 12 mesh kiwi, 9 mesh turquoise, 12 mesh kiwi, 6 mesh turquoise (cut off the 5th and 6th stitch together). Back area - Crochet 6 mesh turquoise (cut off 1st and 2nd stitch together), crochet 33 stitches of kiwi, 6 mesh turquoise (cut off 5th and 6th stitch together) - leaving 86 stitches.

The rest of the head area is consistently worked in Kiwi:

Round 39 - Round 45: Crochet the front and back areas without declines.

Round 46: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 42nd + 43rd, 44th + 45th, 85th + 86th sts) - 82 stitches remain.

Round 47 - Round 49: Crochet the front and back areas without declines.

Round 50: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 40th + 41st, 42nd + 43rd, 81st + 82st sts) - leaving 78 stitches.

Round 51: Crochet the front and back without taking off.

Round 52: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 38th + 39th, 40th + 41st, 77th + 78th sts) - there are 74 stitches left.

Lap 53: Crochet the front and back without taking off.

Lap 54: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 36th + 37th, 38th + 39th, 71st + 72st sts) - leaving 70 stitches.

Lap 55: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 34th + 35th, 36th + 37th, 69th + 70th sts) - there are 66 stitches left.

Round 56: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 32nd + 33rd, 34th + 35th, 65th + 66th sts) - there are 62 stitches left.

Lap 57: Combine the first and last two stitches of the front and back together (1st + 2nd, 30th + 31st, 32nd + 33rd, 61st + 62st sts) - leaving 58 stitches.

Round 58: Chop the following stitches together: 1st + 2nd, 3rd + 4th, 26th + 27th, 28th + 29th, 30th + 31st, 32nd + 34th, 55th + 56th., 57th + 58th stitch - 50 stitches remain.

Round 59: Combine the following stitches together: 1st + 2nd, 3rd + 4th, 5th + 6th, 7th + 8th, 18th + 19th, 20th + 21st, 22nd + 23rd, 24. + 25., 26. + 27., 28. + 29., 30. + 31., 32. + 33., 43. + 44., 45. + 46, 47. + 48., 49. + 50th mesh.

Crochet the owl's eyes

The eyes are crocheted in rounds:

Round 1 in rust red: Cast on 8 stitches in a thread ring and close with a slit stitch.

Crochet 2 rounds in rust red: Crochet 2 stitches in each stitch, doubling the number of stitches = 16 stitches.

Round 3 in rust red: crochet without doubling.

Round 4 in turquoise: crochet 2 stitches in each stitch, doubling the stitch count = 32 stitches.

Round 5 in turquoise: Crochet without doubling.

Round 6 in beige: Crochet 2 stitches in every other stitch = 48 stitches.

Round 7 in Beige: crochet without doubling: Crochet 1 stick in each round of the preliminary round.

Crochet ears of the owl

The ears are crocheted in rounds (color: kiwi):

Cast on 1: 6 stitches in a string and close with a slit stitch.
Round 2: the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th stitch is doubled = 10 stitches
Round 3: the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 10th stitch is doubled = 14 stitches
Round 4: the 2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th stitch is doubled = 18 stitches
Round 5: the 2nd, 6th, 11th, 15th stitch is doubled = 22 stitches
Round 6: the 2nd, 7th, 13th, 18th stitch is doubled = 26 stitches
Round 7: the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23th stitch is doubled = 30 stitches
Round 8: Crochet without doubling
Round 9: the 2nd, 9th, 17th, 24th stitch is doubled = 34 stitches
Round 10: Crochet without doubling
Round 11: the 2nd, 11th, 20th, 29th stitch is doubled = 38 stitches

Crochet a second ear as well. The ears are then folded and then sewn to the owl's head.

Crochet wings of the owl

Overall, the wing is crocheted four times (twice in turquoise and twice in beige) and then crocheted a turquoise and a beige wing side.

Row 28: cut off the first two and the last two stitches together = 11 stitches (cut off the first two stitches together: Crochet the transitional air stitch, take the thread through the first stitch, pull the thread through the second stitch and cut off all three loops together)

Row 29: cut off the last two stitches together = 10 stitches
Row 30: cut off the first two and the last two stitches together = 8 stitches
Row 31: cut off the first two and the last two stitches together = 6 stitches

Place one turquoise and one beige wing side on top of each other and crochet in rusty red with sturdy stitches. Make sure that the work is the same.

Crochet the owl's nose

The nose is crocheted in rounds (color apple green):

Cast on 1: 8 stitches in a thread ring and close with a slit stitch.
Round 2: crochet without doubling = 8 stitches
Round 3: the 2nd and 6th stitches are doubled = 10 sts
Round 4: the 3rd and 7th stitch are doubled = 12 sts
Round 5: the 3rd and 9th stitch are doubled = 14 sts
Round 6 - Round 9: crochet without doubling = 14 stitches
Crochet round 7: 3 Knittmaschen, 8 fixed loops, 3 Knittmaschen (the 3rd Kettsmasche forms already the round conclusion). The back edge is slightly lower and the nose is easier to sew on.

Completion of the owl

Fill up the owl's body. For this purpose, filling cotton can be used - from the owl is then a cuddly pillow. If the owl is to stand afterwards, cherry pits are suitable as filling material.

Close the top seam.

Squeeze the ears flat and sew on.

Sew on the nose.

Sew on eyes.

Sew both wings on the side of the owl.
