Uhuhuhuhu, uhuhuhuhu: Owls are fascinating creatures full of grace, intelligence and charisma - no wonder they inspire so many people. If you want to create decorative owls for your home, we recommend the great variants of paper that we present to you in this DIY guide. Each guide will guide you step by step to magical paper owls!
It's easy to make owls out of paper. For simple but pretty versions you only need a few materials and a minimum of time. In addition, you can make these decorative elements wonderful with your children, especially since we consistently offer you matching templates. To appeal to advanced hobbyists as well as newcomers to the world of creative DIY, we also present some more complex ideas for crafting paper owls. But do not worry: each variant can be implemented easily. Choose your favorite owl creation and follow the instructions. Have fun!
Owl made of paper
You need this:
- colored photocard and construction paper
- black felt-tip pen
- scissors
- Glue
- pencil

Step 1: Print one of our originals on plain copy paper.

Tip: We offer you three different templates: one for a small one, one for a medium sized owl and one for a big owl. Of course you only need to print out the templates for the little owl you want to make.
Step 2: Cut out the parts of the template with scissors.
Step 3: Transfer the stencil for the Owl's body to colored cardboard with a pencil.
Note: Whether you use red, purple, blue or any other color is up to you. Just make sure that the couleur matches the yellow, white and orange construction paper. Otherwise, you are, of course, free to customize the colors individually. We just make you a suggestion.
Step 4: Cut out all parts.
Step 5: Glue your nose and eyes to the owl's body.
Tip: Leave only a little distance to the ears - as seen in our picture.
Step 6: Stick the wings and feet in the appropriate places.

Tip: Depending on whether the owl should look straight or shy aside, the pupils must be in the middle or offset to the edge of the eyes. If you want a sleeping owl, paint closed eyelids in the white fields. Just look at our picture above.
Step 8: So that the owl can also be hung, stick a wooden clamp to the back with hot glue. Finished!
Owl from paper plate
You need this:
- Paper plate
- Paints and brushes or felt-tip pens
- Construction paper (orange, black, white)
- scissors
- PVA glue
- Holzklammer
Step 1: Fold the paper plate as shown on the pictures.
Step 2: Then the owl is painted. Let your creativity take over your mind and body. Alone with a black felt-tip pen and many geometric shapes and lines you can create a creative design.
Step 3: Fold back the upper fold and cut the ears as follows.
Step 4: Afterwards, eyes, beak and feet are cut out of construction paper. The eyes consist of two circles of equal size. The beak is a long triangle. The feet look like three-pronged crowns standing upside down.
Step 5: Now eyes, beak and feet are glued on.
Step 6: So that you can also hang the paper owl, stick a wooden clamp on the back.
Done is the owl!

Owl from a toilet paper roll
You need this:
- toilet paper roll
- colored construction paper (eg in red, yellow and blue)
- possibly wobbly eyes
- scissors
- craft glue
- pencil
- compasses
Step 1: Roll the toilet paper roll into red construction paper - in such a way that the roll is completely covered by the construction paper.
Step 2: Cut the construction paper to fit. At one end of the roll of toilet paper, let it pass about two to three centimeters of the sound paper. This protruding part is shaped in the next step to ears.
Step 3: Glue the construction paper around the toilet paper roll with craft glue.
4th step: Bend the supernatant of the clay paper so that the ears of the owl emerge.
5th step: Draw the individual elements on different colored construction paper:
- two circles for the eye border
- two curved wings
- a triangular beak
- many circles of equal size as feathers
Tip: As already described in the first manual, you do not need to adhere to our color suggestion, but can create your own creation.
Step 6: Glue the items to the owl body.
Step 7: Finally, stick the wobbly eyes to the round eye borders. Finished!
Note: Position the standing owl on a table, shelf, cupboard or window sill to bring it out.
Make owl lanterns
You need this:
- colored construction paper
- Transparent paper (2 x DIN)
- satin ribbon
- wire
- lantern stick
- eyelets
- Ösenzange
- pencil
- ruler
- scissors
- Glue
- double-sided adhesive tape
- LED tea light
- our template
- copy paper
- printer
Step 1: Print our original twice on ordinary copy paper.

Step 2: Cut out the individual parts with scissors.
Step 3: Transfer the stencils to colored construction paper, for example:
Important: Make sure you have everything twice as you will need two more or less identical pages with a little owl motif for your paper owl lantern.
Step 4: Carefully cut out the elements with scissors.
Step 5: Place the tracing paper on one of the body borders and draw the appropriate size.
Note: The tracing paper must be slightly smaller than the outer body border.
Step 6: Repeat the step with the second tracing paper.
Step 7: Glue one cut-to-size translucent paper sheet to the two body borders.
Step 8: Cut a 42 x 15 centimeter rectangle from a new purple paper sheet. First draw in the measurements using a ruler and a pencil.
Step 9: Place the rectangle with the long sides horizontal.
Step 10: Mark a distance of one centimeter at the top and bottom (gently draw a long line from one end to the other).
Step 11: Glue double-sided adhesive tape to both marked long sides (simply trim appropriate strips).
Step 12: Cut small prongs in both sides, which are now covered with double-sided tape. Take a look at our pictures.
Tip: Do not have eyelets (pliers) ">
Note: Place the owl body face down on the table. Then glue the rectangle from the top.
Step 15: Repeat step 16 with the other owl body. Gradually your paper owl lantern takes shape.
Step 16: Pick up two eyelets and a pair of pliers. Center the eyelets on the short sides of the rectangle.
Step 17: Glue all remaining parts to the two owl bodies (ie eyes, nose, wings and feet).
Step 18: Grab a sufficiently long piece of slightly flexible wire and pass it through both holes that you made in step 14 with a pliers or punch.
Step 19: Turn the wire ends together.
Step 20: Unfortunately, the twisted wire ends do not look very nice and occasionally prick. To prevent this and to complete your work of art, tie color-matching satin ribbon around it - the unattractive wire ends are already stylishly hidden and harmless.
Step 21: Finally, place the LED tealight inside your lantern and attach the lantern stick. Finished!
Tip: As a suspension you can also use an old wire hanger. For this, the middle piece is cut off with a pair of pliers. The two ends are then pushed through the eyelets.
