Painting colorful pictures with wool - that's easy with a few tricks! In this tutorial, we'll show you how to use a count pattern to knit a colorful ethnic pattern.

Ethno pattern you can find gorgeous, but you are afraid to lose track in the tangle ">

Material and preparation

For the ethnic pattern from this guide you will need wool in seven different colors. We used sun yellow, black, brown, orange, rust red, light yellow and olive green. Make sure that all yarns have a similar run length. This value indicates the thickness and is noted on the band. With a medium strong, smooth wool, entangled with needle size four or five, the pattern comes out beautifully. In addition, such a yarn is easy to work with, so you can concentrate on knitting with multiple threads. The right needle size is also on the band.

You need:

  • smooth yarn of medium strength in seven colors
  • few knitting needles

Knitting ethnic pattern

Our ethnic pattern has a repeat of 24 stitches and 36 rows, meaning that you need to knit this piece to work through the entire pattern once. On your first try, your mesh size should be divisible by 24 so you can knit all rapports completely. Below we explain how to proceed with a different number of stitches.

Since the pattern described here begins with orange, strike the stitches in that color. Then knit a left-hand set before starting the count pattern.

Work through the pattern from the bottom up. Each box represents a mesh. The symbols indicate the colors of the stitches. In rows with odd numbers (= rows) read the lines from right to left, in those with even numbers (= reverse). Before the beginning of each row, check which colors you need and link them. Cut unnecessary threads and knot them.

Tip: If you need the color a maximum of four rows later, you can hang the thread down the edge and resume later.

In rows, knit right stitches and guide the threads on the back. Each color skips over the differently colored stitches so that loose pieces of thread run on the back.

Tip: Make sure you carry the threads loosely so that the fabric stays elastic and does not contract.

In back rows, knit on the left and let the tensioning threads run along the front. Because you always turn the work over, all the loose threads on the back are hidden in the finished fabric.

After 28 rows you see the following knitting result in front of you.

After 33 rows your knitting looks like this.

If a mesh divisible by 24 does not fit your project, you will need to knit a repeat incompletely. First, calculate the excess stitches, for example, for 80 stitched stitches:

80: 24 = 3, rest 8

In this case, knit three complete repeats. Then, work in rows again the first eight stitches of the count pattern. In backstroke knit first the last eight stitches, then the three complete repeats.

Tip: Please note the different reading direction for back and forth rows! The last stitches in back rows are in the counting pattern just above the first in rows.

Repeat the 36 rows until your project is finished. Use off-white rusty or olive green because these are the colors of the last row. Alternatively, you can knit an Ethno pattern border by working through the pattern only once in height. The rest of your piece is made in one color. This looks decorative, for example, on the front of pullovers.

Tip: If you want a smooth border, you should strike two additional stitches. There are several ways to knit these edge stitches. For a single edge, lift the first stitch of each row onto the right needle without knitting. Lay the thread at work. Knit the last stitch on the right side. For seams, the knot edge is particularly good. For this knit all edge stitches on the right. If your work is going to get a solid finish, crochet it after you've finished knitting.

Own counting pattern

How to create your own counting pattern

You need checkered paper on which you draw your pattern with colored pencils or symbols as in our count pattern.

Please note:

1. No Tension should bridge more than ten stitches, that is, use the colors within the row regularly again. An exception is a single different-colored motif in the middle of the pattern. In this case, you do not have to take the only required color to the edge of the row.

2. If you want to knit several repeats in width, the transition between the pattern end and the beginning must be seamless. As an aid, you can draw the pattern several times next to each other and later frame the repeat with thick lines.

3. To avoid tangles, you should limit yourself as a beginner to a maximum of three colors per row.
