The so-called screed concrete is a special and pre-mixed mortar that can be used universally both indoors and outdoors. Screed concrete has the property of becoming very firm after processing and is very easy to process. If necessary, it can even be made by itself if only small areas are to be processed.

characteristics

Screed concrete has good properties. In addition to its many applications, it impresses with its easy processing and the fact that it is low in shrinkage. It is a cement-bound working material that has a very good strength development and, after drying, is weather and frost resistant. It is a dry concrete or dry screed mortar, which can be used both for the production of foundations as well as for the production of concrete components and simple screeds. Of course, this type of concrete can also be used as a floor for rooms in the basement, in the workshop or in the garage. The building material is very popular because of its many good features and also cheap in the purchase.

Make the concrete yourself or buy it ready

Screed concrete can be made from only a few basic materials such as cement, a 6-bit aggregate and water itself. Of course, a concrete mixer is best for mixing the building material. There is also the screed concrete in different varieties in the hardware store ready for further processing to buy. The advantage of this is that it is extremely cheap available (the material prices are around two euros for 40 kilos) and can be processed immediately.

Preparation of the building material

If the screed concrete itself is produced, the individual materials should be matched as closely as possible. As a result, a better strength of the building material is achieved later. There are several ways to mix the concrete. The easiest way is probably to borrow a concrete mixer. Hereby, the building material is very easy, convenient and above all to mix thoroughly. If this is not possible, alternatively, a large tub made of plastic or optionally a plastic bucket can be used, for example, if no large amount of screed concrete is needed. The concrete is then stirred with a whisk, which is attached to a drill. Alternatively, of course, a blade for mixing the raw materials can be used. It should be noted, however, that the concrete is mixed as thoroughly as possible in order to obtain a homogeneous mass, which can be processed well later.

Here is a short list of the things needed to mix screed concrete:

  • Cement in the desired amount
  • 6er aggregate in the required quantity
  • water
  • Concrete mixer or alternatively a plastic pan and whisk for the drill or in the simplest case a shovel
  • optionally additives to improve the properties of the concrete

Leveling plate and float as useful aids in the processing of the building material

Another tip: For the processing of the building material after mixing a so-called level should be used. It is a universal tool that enables good work results. The leveling plate is very well suited for smoothing the screed concrete after application. It also makes it possible to remove larger surfaces during plastering. Also, a so-called float can provide useful services, for example, when plastering or laying screed concrete. With the aid of a float, fatigue-free working is possible. Due to its special coating, the building material does not stick to the float board.

Buy purchased screed concrete instead of producing it yourself

The easiest way is certainly to use purchased or delivered concrete. This is produced in a large concrete plant. All individual components are costly and calculated, so that the buyer receives a perfectly matched concrete mix. Frequently, a better strength of the later concrete can be achieved in this way. When processing the building material, the buyer can also save a lot of time, as this is very easy to perform.

Process screed concrete

Further tips for the preparation of the concrete

For the processing of the building material, it may be useful to first a little more water into the mixture, so that the screed concrete is liquid. It can be more easily distributed. However, this should also be a longer drying time scheduled. Important: Screed concrete should not be processed at too low temperatures of less than 5 ° Celsius. Processing in case of rain, strong wind or direct sunlight is to be avoided if possible. The prepared substrate should be sufficiently wetted.

This is how the finished screed concrete is processed

  • The substructure for screed concrete should be as dry as possible and, of course, free from contamination. There must also be no cracks or subsidence, as these can have a negative effect on the subsequent flooring. Loose concrete or mortar residues should be removed if possible before applying the concrete with suitable tools.
  • Before applying the concrete, the primer should be applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Among other things, it ensures that the pores of the substrate used are closed.
  • If it is a moisture-sensitive floor, an additional primer made of epoxy resin should be used.
  • This is followed by processing the screed concrete. This is applied as evenly as possible on the corresponding substrate.

Use reinforcing grid for screed concrete

Under certain circumstances, it may be necessary to use so-called reinforcing mesh, for example, when a stiffening is necessary. Such stiffening should be used if inflexible materials such as tiles or natural stone are to be laid.

Armierungsgitter are nothing more than simple wire mesh. They are intended to give the screed concrete additional stability and are embedded in the upper third of the screed. One differentiates between different sizes of reinforcing mesh. In addition, different mesh sizes and wire sizes are available for the grilles. The wire used for a reinforcing grid has special strength properties. There are both bare and galvanized Estrichgitter. As an alternative to a screed grid or reinforcing grid and a so-called fiber reinforcement can be used. Instead of a wire while special fibers are applied to the liquid screed. The fiber reinforcement is slightly more expensive than a conventional reinforcing mesh, but can be much easier to process.

Further notes on the processing of screed concrete

  • If a floating screed is to be produced, then the layer of concrete should have a thickness of at least three and a half centimeters.
  • If the screed floor is designed as a so-called heated screed, only half of the water will be used. Instead of the remaining water, a special adhesive emulsion is used.
  • After mixing, the screed concrete should be processed as soon as possible. It is important that only a lump-free concrete mass is used.
  • During the processing of the building material, the eyes should be protected. Even the direct skin contact with the building material should be avoided if possible. If it still comes into contact with the skin, it is important to rinse with plenty of water. In case of eye contact consult an ophthalmologist immediately.

Prices

When buying screed concrete, you should not be confused. Often this is also offered as "concrete screed". In this overview we present some products and the respective prices. The prices vary between 1.15 € to 5.49 € for 10 kg screed concrete . The more screed you buy, the cheaper it will be. You can buy a 40 kg pack already for 5, 99 € (about 15 cents per 1 kg).
