Knitting a simple wave pattern - instructions for beginners

Wave patterns look classy and look much more complicated than they are. There are many different variants, all of which have a different level of difficulty. A very simple wave pattern that even beginners can knit without much effort is introduced in this guide. It does not matter if it is used in a scarf or in a pullover. Waves always look chic and give a knit a great look.

The waves shown here run horizontally over the entire work. But it is also possible to lay the work so that the waves run from top to bottom. To do this you need to take in as many stitches as you need at the height of the finished work and knit that many rows until your work gets the width you want. These knitting instructions refer to waves that run from left to right, ie across.

Tip: This pattern is suitable for any wool quality. But it looks particularly noble in a fine yarn with a mohair . Regarding the strength of the wool, it should be noted that you should always make a stitch test. Finer yarn brings out the individual waves better than very thick yarn. Also stocking yarn is well suited for this pattern.

To knit this pattern, you should make a sample. For starters, look for a simple yarn that is easy to knit. Cotton is a great choice to start with, so you can quickly identify the pattern and make mistakes easier for you. If you master the pattern, you will quickly realize that fine wool with a small mohair is particularly well suited. It is best to start with a scarf or a shawl to get the knitting routine of a wave pattern.

Once you understand the pattern, you can quickly memorize it. The advantage of the wave pattern in this tutorial is that you can combine the pattern with smooth right. So you can knit waves in the intervals that you like. This tutorial describes a pattern set. Repeat it until you get the desired width for your finished work. You always start after the two edge stitches.

Material and preparation

Start with a piece of wool of about 50 grams to practice the wave pattern in this knitting pattern. You'll need right-hand stitches, left-hand stitches, knit stitches, and envelopes for this simple wave pattern.

You need this:

  • Wool that can be knit uncomplicated like cotton etc.
  • Knitting needles in the appropriate strength

Tip: For a wave pattern, you can also work well tone-on-tone. For example, knit the waves in a different color than the other areas, or use rainbow-colored ripples to add a happy touch to the finished work.

Start by striking 21 stitches. First knit on the right, ie the back row and the back row from the right stitch. Knit 5 rows as above.

Start now with the wave pattern and knit as described in the following instructions:

1st row: Knit 2 edge stitches on the right, knit two stitches on the right, knit two stitches on the right, knit two stitches on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-on, 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch right, 1 envelope, 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, knit two stitches on the right, knit two stitches on the right, knit two stitches on the right, knit 2 edge stitches on the right.

The first row of your wave pattern is now finished.

In the following row, knit only right stitches. Your first wave is ready.

Then add 6 rows of smooth right. To do this, knit the back row from the right stitches and the back row from the left stitches.

Then repeat the two rows from the wave pattern as described above in the manual and again 6 rows smooth right.

Instead of the 6 rows in smooth patterns, you can also knit just two or any number more smooth right. Depending on your choice, the waves will appear more or less frequently in your finished part. If necessary, even knit the waves at irregular intervals. In a scarf, for example, that can be very sexy.

If you continue in this way, you will get a continuous wave pattern from a pattern set. You can work this pattern from a total of 8 rows in two colors.

For this, knit the waves in the first and the smooth surfaces in the second color. If that seems too easy for you, make one color for the smooth parts and knit the waves in different colors. Your work will be really noble in sea tones, which can underline the waves. This pattern looks very elegant in black and white.

Important: Do not forget the edge stitches, they give the work a firm framework. Knit the edge stitches on each side right.

If the pattern works flawlessly, think about where you want to use it. It works well with the cuffs of socks or gloves. A simple scarf is enhanced by the pattern and even a jacket or a vest get a very special touch, if you use the pattern from this knitting pattern.

It is important that you start the waves only after a firm edge, the knitting thus gets more stability. Also, the two edge stitches left and right are important. Knitt the pattern set next to each other as often as you like. Or try to work in the nice waves just in the middle of a cloth, a scarf or a pullover. For this, however, you should always mark the beginning and the end of the pattern set. There are ready to buy markings in stores. But you can just as easily use a simple ring, a bead or a paperclip.

Even knit the waves once in patchwork squares. A blanket made of individual pieces in this pattern has a very special charm. The combination with other patterns, however, is difficult, since the waves usually determine the entire work. But you can use waves as a border on a cardigan or a sweater. Even knit skirts can get a degree in this pattern.
