  • Potholders in doubleface knitting pattern

Potholders are always up to date. Even the modern kitchen can not do without these helpful helpers. Perhaps a few years ago they had a slightly dusty reputation, today they bring fresh wind to their home stove with their great colors.

For self-knitted potholders to fulfill their function completely, they should of course be heat-resistant and robust. Cotton fulfills exactly these challenges. Cotton withstands high temperatures very well and is also a very sturdy yarn. And today's colors have a very friendly and fresh character. This makes each potholder at the same time a pretty decoration next to the stove.

Potholders can of course be knitted in different ways. We decided on a tutorial in Doubleface Srtrickmuster. With this knitting technique, the potholder is double-knit, meaning that two pieces are knitted at the same time. A front part and a back part. And the special thing is that each side is knit with a different color. That means: the front part has a different color than the back part. And the whole thing is enhanced by knitting a pattern in the reverse color.

But that's not all. Both sides appear in the manual at Doubleface in right-hand stitches. And both sides are on a needle. Two knitting pieces are knitted on one needle at the same time. A right-hand stitch and a left-hand stitch The right stitch is knitted in one color, the left stitch in the second color. This left-hand stitch appears on the back as a right-hand stitch. When knitting, both knit parts always turn their left side inwards, and on the outside every knitted part appears with the right stitch.

Picture inside part

Although this is very complicated, it is a simple technique. We will show you the Doubleface knitting pattern step by step with our instructions, so that also every beginner can easily learn this knitting pattern.

Material and preparation

As important as the knitting pattern, is also the yarn that will entangle you. Especially with potholders you should use a wool that has grown the hot handles of a pot or a pan. Cotton is very well suited for this. This yarn keeps the heat away from your fingers while being very sturdy and easy to care for. Cotton can be washed in the washing machine, so there will be no hygiene problems.

  • We decided on the instructions for an organic cotton yarn. We chose the colors in high contrast, so that the small sample example comes into its own. Our yarn has a running length of 100 meters / 50 grams.
  • We knitted with a needle size of 4.5.

Equivalent yarns, as we have used them, can be found at various suppliers.
So Katia yarn offers a wonderful cotton yarn "Fair Cotton". Also in organic quality Lana Grossa has the yarn "Organico" on offer. Both manufacturers have great colors to choose from.

You need this for 1 potholder:

  • Cotton yarn in two different colors, 50 grams each.
  • The knitting needle depends on your yarn selection.
  • Crochet hook in the same thickness as the knitting needles
  • darning needle

Tip: Before you start knitting your potholder, knit a knit in Doubleface knitting pattern. With the mesh sample, you can determine the exact size of your potholder.

On each banderole, you will find information about how many stitches you must knit and knit for a square of 10 centimeters.

Doubleface - Basics

The doubleface knitting technique can be knit in different ways. The basic type is always the same, only the execution may differ slightly from user to user.

We show you a very simple design that can easily be reworked by any beginner. If you've never knit double face, we recommend trying out this knitting technique with two yarns you no longer need. For that you need some patience at the beginning. But after just a few knitting rows you will find that this type of knitting is easy and requires no special basic knowledge. After a few practice rounds, you can start knitting with the potholder.

thread attitude

They knit on a needle simultaneously with two thread colors, one front and one back. So that there is no tangle, you should arrange your work threads as shown in the picture on your index finger.

With the thread arrangement on the finger basically applies:

With the thread on top of the index finger, which in the picture is the color blackberry, the back is knitted. That is, with this yarn are always worked left stitches.

With the thread lying on the forefinger down, in our example of the picture, this is the color cream, the front is worked. The stitches are always knitted on the right.
It must therefore be rearranged in each round, the threads.
This means that the foreground color and the background color are also interchanged.

Tip: Do not despair on the first few rounds if the yarn does not fold immediately on the index finger. There is no master yet fallen from the sky. Just try it again.

By the way, as in normal knitting, the threads are passed between the ring finger and the little finger.

casting on

As with normal knitting, there are several ways of stitching.

We decided on a very simple variant. Although the same basic color will be visible on both sides, we have repealed this with the crochet. So the border of the potholder appears on all sides in the same color.

Beat the double stitch count with a thread color. So if you want to make your pot holder 30 stitches plus 2 edge stitches, apply 64 stitches in one color. The second yarn color will not be used until the next round.

edge stitch

Again, we have chosen a variant that is easiest for beginners to knit.

The edge stitch is knitted with both yarn threads as the right stitch. Turn to work. In the new round, only lift off the edge stitch. The two threads remain on the front of the needle. With the needle of the right hand, pierce this edge stitch at the back and lift off. Although the border stitch now appears in two colors, it becomes almost invisible again as the work becomes crocheted.

Of course, there is also a variant that displays the correct mesh color on the front and on the back. Only, with this technique, you then need to sew both parts together at the side with a mattress stitch.

With our knitting, both pieces are knitted together immediately. For example, if you want to knit a loop with Doubleface, it's a good idea to knit a variation other than the edge stitch.

1 round

After the stitch stop it goes on like this:

Re-sort the work threads. The mesh color, which is now used in the foreground, lies on the index finger below. Lift off the edge stitch with both work threads. Only in the very first round, this edge stitch is knitted with both threads on the right. When knitting the first stitch = a right stitch, both work threads are behind the needle. In doing so, you pick the foreleg thread with the right needle and knit a right stitch.

The following stitch will be a left stitch. For this, you get both work threads before work. Now, with the thread of background work on top of your index finger, knit a left-hand stitch. Then put both work threads behind the needle again.

The next stitch:

With the lower work thread = your foreground color, knit a right stitch.
Put both work threads before work.

With the upper work thread = your background color (back) knit a left stitch.

Tip: If you have both work threads in front of the needle in a left-hand stitch, hold the first color of the right-hand stitch with your thumb. This makes it easier to knit the left stitch.

This is how you knit the entire row. Right stitch - left stitch, alternating with the different work threads. Knit off the last stitch as the right stitch with both threads.

2nd round

The 2nd round and all other rounds are knitted in the same way as the 1st round.
It only changes the color change. Your foreground color is now the background color you used in the first round.

They start again with the edge stitch. Now comes the first right stitch, then the first left stitch. They now knit all rounds in this technique. After the 3rd or 4th round, you will have learned the knitting technique and the system, which color is knitted, seems logical to you.

Decreasing

When deciding we have decided on a color. In our example, it was the color cream.

  • Knit off the edge stitch on the right.
  • Take off the next stitch on the right.
  • Knit the next left stitch on the left.
  • Pull the two previous stitches over the knitted stitch on the left. This turns 3 stitches into 1 stitch.
  • Then take off the next stitch on the right.
  • Knit the following stitch on the left.
  • Pull the two previous stitches over the left stitch.

So continue, until at the end only one stitch is left on the needle. Now you can cut off the working thread and pull through this last stitch.

edge

We have decided to crochet the potholder with a firm edge.
For this we used the second work thread, which had not yet been cut off.
In each edge stitch of the potholder half a stick is worked. Crochet all four sides according to this principle.

Crochet the corners in a puncture site:

  • 1 half stick
  • 1 air mesh
  • 1 half stick

Then work normally with half sticks in each edge stitch.

Incorporating knitting patterns

A pattern can be easily knitted. So that even beginners achieve a success, we have knitted a very simple pattern. Of course you can also work more complicated patterns. However, you should then make a small drawing that shows exactly when you need to change the thread. When knitting the pattern, only the color is changed. The foreground color becomes the background color and vice versa.

Oops, a mistake has crept in the knitting pattern

Again, after 2 or 3 rounds, you find yourself knitting a stitch with the wrong work thread. Do not panic, you can change that quickly. As an aid, you can use a crochet hook, so you can easily and quickly lift the necessary stitches again.

Just drop the stitches over the wrong knit stitch. So far down, until the error is no longer visible. They now have louder long strings. Put this stitch on your crochet hook. Now knit the stitch with the crochet hook row by row with the right stitches up. For this, the stitch is taken on the crochet hook, now simply pull the overlying work thread through this stitch. This is how you proceed until you have processed all the threads upwards and have returned to normal knitting.

Potholders in doubleface knitting pattern

With our wool strength of 4.5 we knitted as follows:

  • 64 stitches stop with a thread.
  • From the second row continue working with two threads following the basic pattern.
  • Our potholder has reduced to 30 pattern meshes (1 right and 1 left stitch) plus 2 edge stitches = 32 stitches.
  • Knit 16 rows in the basic pattern and the foreground color. This corresponds to about 6 inches.
  • In the 17th row we have incorporated the pattern.
  • Knit 10 stitches on the right in the foreground color.
  • Knit 10 stitches on the right in the background color.
  • Knit 10 stitches on the right in the foreground color.
  • 13 rows are knitted up in this episode.
  • Then we worked 16 rows in the basic pattern and the foreground color again.

  • Crochet all four edges with half sticks.
  • At the last corner work a loop for hanging.
  • For this we have struck 24 air meshes, stabbed into the opposite half of the rod and crocheted these meshes with strong stitches.

Sew all work threads.

The first potholder in doubleface knitting technology has now been successfully completed. The second potholder will now be an easy knit to knit.
