Candle making is in vogue - the DIY movement has already conquered this area, and not without reason. You hardly believe it, but making candles yourself is so easy. Theoretically, old wax remains, candle stumps from the last Advent wreath and you have almost everything you need for self-cast candles.

Instructions for homemade scented candles

Basic materials

You do not need much for homemade scented candles. You should first get some materials and, above all, plan which fragrance you want to create.

For the casting of the candles you need:

• Wax residues or candle wax granules
• candlewick
• Molds for filling
• Saucepan with water
• small, heatable bowl
• possibly wax color
• scissors
• Wooden sticks or roulade skewer
• fragrant aroma

Heat wax

At the beginning, sort and shred the wax residues that you want to process in the scented candle. In this case, impurities and burnt-off wick remains should be completely removed, so you later have no crumbs or residues in the candle. Wax granules are already shredded wax, which you can buy in selected craft and hobby shops.

To measure the right amount of wax, fill the desired mold with the granules until it is completely filled.

Heat this wax plus one or two large spoons more in a water bath. The additional two spoons fill the candle a little bit, as the surface of the wax shrinks slightly after melting.

Allow the wax to melt to low to medium heat.

Prepare molds

During the melting process prepare the desired candle shape.

Forms that later remain filled with candles can be, for example, small glasses, cups and bowls. Just be aware that they are heat resistant. Otherwise, you can pour liquid wax almost in all forms and make a beautiful candle.

Cardboard or paper forms can be easily torn off the candle after drying:

You can, for example, shorten an old beverage carton to the desired candle height - for the wick you pierce a hole in the ground with a needle. This is pulled through there and tied at the top center of a wooden skewer. The spit holds the wick in the liquid wax in the middle. A small lump of wax can close the hole well, so that nothing can flow out when the candle is poured.

Another option is to pour wax into paper rolls of toilet paper. But you need an occlusive surface, such as sand. The cardboard tube is placed upright in the sand. The wick is previously passed through the opening and taut both up and down on a wooden skewer. The sand should stop the wax.

Create a candle fragrance

If the wax is now liquid and the molds are prepared, you can give the wax a specific scent. Make scented candles yourself is not difficult. Only the fragrance ingredients are mixed into the hot wax. But what creates a strong yet pleasant fragrance "> Essential Oils

The simplest and fastest version is working with essential oils. You will already find a small selection of essential oils in many selected decoration, drugstore and hobby shops. You can already buy these for less than 2 €. For a special request can be found online but a lot of different fragrances. A few drops of the small bottles are enough to perfume the wax. Popular and well-available scent nuances are:

If you have decided on a fragrance or a combination of scents, just drip a few drops of the oil into the hot wax. As soon as the smell rises in your nose, it should be enough oil. Then stir well.

Fresh ingredients and spices

You have a little more work with fresh ingredients. These should be prepared before the melt, at least have prepared: fresh and dried lemon, lime and orange, as well as coffee beans or coffee powder, cinnamon and vanilla, fresh and dried flowers such as lavender marigold or rose, but also different teas such as chamomile.

You can elicit almost all foods and spices a flavor, one more and the other less. For lemon or lime, we recommend adding the juice to the hot wax. You can then put the dried slices in the candle mold. Fresh slices could mold later.

Slow the dosage of the flavor. Keep touching on the desired scent step by step.

If a candle has failed you completely and it hardly smells or leaves you to breathe, the wax can be melted down again. If you do not have enough fragrance, just add some flavor. If the candle stinks, you should add more wax and pour any two candles.

Pour candle

Now take the bowl of scented wax from the water bath. Do not forget gloves. First pour a small layer into the candle mold. So you seal potential leaks in the mold. If the layer has dried a bit, the remaining wax can be added.

The liquid wax in the mold can now be decorated. Add small coffee beans, petals or dried fruit slices, depending on the scent you used.

Finish the candle

When the wax has dried completely, the candle can be used. If you have then poured the candle into a cardboard mold, the cardboard can easily be peeled off and cut in an emergency. If you can not solve the candle, a small stay in the fridge can be the solution. Due to the cold, the wax contracts - the shape can then be solved more easily.

Now only the wick is cut off and the scented candle is ready.

Ideas for homemade scented candles

Christmas scent: vanilla cinnamon candle

Candles should not be missing at Christmas. Spicy-scented candles that spread the scent of gingerbread, biscuits and oranges in the room are perfect. A Christmassy but restrained scent combination is that of vanilla and cinnamon. Scrape out vanilla pods and add the small vanilla crumbs to the hot wax, as well as the cinnamon. This mixture gives rise to a Christmas atmosphere!

Summer scented candle: lime-lemon

A scented candle variant for the summer and against mosquitoes is the Cintronella candle. This oil in the candle will keep you away from mosquitoes on some summer evenings. A similarly scented candle will make you with squeezed limes and lemons. The dried slices of lime and lemon just enter in the jar.

Tip: If you want to stack two levels of slices, start with the bottom layer first. Place the slices inside the glass. Then pour in the wax until the glass is half full. Wait until this layer of wax has dried. Now insert the second layer of slices - these can now easily be placed on the first, dry layer without sinking.

DIY scented candle with coffee fragrance

For those who like it a bit tart, the scented candle with coffee scent is a suitable variant. Mortar coffee beans and then put them in the hot wax. The heat releases the coffee aromas. Then pour the wax into the mold and then add individual, whole beans on the wax surface - the DIY scented candle is ready for connoisseurs!

Lavender candle with real flowers

Flower lovers will love the lavender candle. For this scented candle, simply add dried lavender flowers to the hot wax. The heat works in a similar way to coffee - the lavender blossoms are almost cooked and give your fragrance off properly.

Orange Peel scented candle

This idea will inspire you - take dried orange peel and pour wax into it. For this purpose, wax flavored with orange oil is simply poured into the dry dish. Before, the wick is pulled through a small hole in the middle. Fix the wick inside with a little bit of wax and close the hole that no wax can flow out. A clamp fixes the wick in the middle. And already this is ready for both the winter, as well as the summer suitable scented candle.
