I'm a big fan of meaningful resource usage, so I want to show you in this sewing guide how to quickly and easily sew a spelled pillow yourself. The spelled-fur pillow convinces with its comfort and the long-lasting heat storage. The soothing healing and health pillow is perfect for pain relief and very easy to shape. That is how it is sewn.

Difficulty level 2/5
(suitable for beginners)

Material costs 3/5
(depending on the fabric selection between € 0, - from the remaining utilization and € 60, -)

Time required 2.5 / 5
(including pattern about 1-3 hours - depending on whether you also sew a pillow case and then again about 45min for filling and sewing)

Why a spelled pillow ">

Of course, other fillings undeniably have their advantages, such as rice, grape seeds, Swiss stone pine chips or millet grains and if you like these fillings rather, you can exchange them as you like. Just keep in mind that depending on the consistency of the filling, the finished pillow will then feel softer or harder.
In addition, the spelled cushion can be warmed, for example in the oven and then over a longer period, the stored heat in a controlled temperature.

material selection

When it comes to issues as important as our sleep, I do not just want to make sure that they are well-tolerated natural products without pollutants, so in this case I use only Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 cotton fabrics. Ideally, too with GOTS certificate.

Details can be found here oeko-tex.com and here global-standard.org read.

Cushions with special fillings are best made from 100% cotton, as they are both sturdy and durable, and therefore last longer. Here is my fabric selection for the cushion cover (outer cover):

amount of material

How much fabric you need depends on the size and shape of your pillow. For the neck is more likely to provide a cylindrical shape, for the belly fits a rectangular or moon shape better. You can think it over as you wish. In any case, you should add a seam allowance of one to one and a half centimeters around it.

Tip: For squares and rectangles you should absolutely pay attention to right angles, so then also your pillowcases sit well.

patterns

I would like to sew a classic spelled pillow in rectangular shape with a pillow cover. My measurements are 40x50cm. So with the seam allowances, it's 43x53cm. And yes, I know, that's RIGHT BIG. But I also want to use it as a multipurpose cuddly pillow. If you choose a different shape, it is best to draw the pattern on a sheet of paper and then transfer it to your fabrics with seam allowance.

Tip: To allow the corners to be used later, cut them in the seam allowance at an angle of about 1 mm in front of the planned corner or even cut something with the curve.

It is sewn

With pure cotton fabrics, it always pays off, so that the edge does not fray. When you have done that, you can sew the two cut parts right to the right (ie with the "nice" sides together). If you want, you can fix them with a few pins at the corners, so they do not slip when sewing. Then you start at the last quarter of a page with a simple straight stitch and sew to the first corner, then sew on three more pages and then again about a quarter of the last page. The opening, which is now left, is about the length of half a page and serves as a turning and filling opening and this is exactly what is next in line.

Tip: In this case, it is not time-saving to sew with the overlock, because otherwise the corners are not exactly finished otherwise and because on the other hand the filling opening remains uneven on both sides. In addition, you can sew even at the beginning and end of the filling opening only diagonally.

I sewed it with the overlock anyway to show you how to "cheat". So once you have stitched almost all around, you also sew again just next to the seam with a simple straight stitch (light green thread) along and applies exactly at the marked corners.

The beginning and the end are sewn well and you separate the overlock seam left and right of the turning opening right up to your sewing points and shorten the threads. With a wide zig-zag stitch (black thread), you now also finish the turning opening right up to your sewing points.

Well ironed is half won

You now apply your pillow and gently push the corners outward. Now iron the edge of the fill hole so that you can see at the crease where you have to sew later.

Then you can fill in the spelled chaff with a funnel (or a sheet of paper shaped into a funnel). As a special extra you can mix different herbs under the spelled chaff. More about that you can find below at the point "Variations".

In my experience, it has been shown that filling one person alone is not that easy to implement, so I've considered the following (that works great for me): I cut a corner of the sack with the spelled chute obliquely, Then I put my home-made paper funnel with the broad side in front and pull it out until it fits all around well in the opening. Then fix with tape and ready. Commercially available funnels made of plastic are not useful in my opinion, since the spelz hooked immediately and blocked the narrow passage. That's an unnecessary shake and shake, because nothing can come through.

Tip: If the pillow is good enough, close the opening and see if the pillow fits your needs, or if you want to squeeze the s a little more and refill more. The pillow should not be too full, so you can sew it together.

If the fill is up to your liking, you now have two options on how to proceed, and I would definitely choose the second option because it just looks a lot better:

  1. If the pillow is "loose" filled, you can push the down a bit, fix the filling opening with pins and sew once from the outside with a simple straight line over the entire length of the page (sew at the beginning and end not forget).
  2. If the pillow is "bulging", you plug in the filling hole with pins, but in this case you have to sew it by hand. Here the crease is particularly important! Since you should not see the seam in the ideal case, I'll show you how to make a so-called magic seam (also Matzratzen or Leiterstich):

You simply thread a thread (not double) and knot the end. Then, at the very end of the machine seam, you put the first stitch on the seam opening in front of you on the left and sew / knot it as close as possible.

Then you turn the pillow so that the thread is on the right side of you. Then you lay the thread over the opening (ie towards you) and pierce exactly at the crease just before the thread into the fabric and comes out with the needle just behind the thread again.

Then you put the thread over the other side (away from you) and so on. In between, of course, you always pull with feeling on the thread, so that the two substances meet each other exactly. The shorter the individual stitches, the less visible is the seam at the end. At the end you sew again 1-2 times and cut the thread as close as possible.

Tip: If the cut thread is too long and sticks out noticeably, push the end into the seam with the needle.

Put on the pillow

If you've already used your favorite fabric for the spelled pillow, you're done!

If you picked up the "beautiful" fabric, then you need a cushion cover for your latest work. Since you should not wash the spelled pillow, it makes sense to use a cover, especially since it is more hygienic. How to sew a pillowcase with zipper, I have already shown you in my penultimate post. At that time, among other things, I also mentioned the hotel reference that I would like to show you today. It works only with square or rectangular cushions. For special shapes you should choose a variant with button placket or zipper.

The hotel relation

As fast and easy as the hotel cover can be attached to the pillow, it is so easy to sew. You know the dimensions of your pillow. Again, you take about the same seam allowances as your spelled pillow, possibly every 2-3mm per seam allowance more if the cover should sit looser. The small piece of cloth you can trim with 3.5cm additional seam allowance in length as well as the two parts for your spelled pillow, the second fabric part should be about 1/3 longer and contain an additional cm seam allowance. You can also round up generously here.

So in my case:

  • for the one side 43, 5x57cm and
  • for the other side 43.5 × 72.5cm

So that you can see the extension better, I make it for you in a different fabric color (so I cut my longer piece of cloth), just as the front and rear are different for me. With you, of course, everything can be from the same stuff.

First, you finish your two pieces of fabric again. Then you iron the short side of the larger part twice by about 2cm and sew it by means of a simple straight stitch tight edged on both edges of the fabric. Similarly, you also sew a short side of the smaller part. Now you put the smaller piece of cloth on the bigger one and mark the size. At this point you bring a sharp crease, in which the two left sides of the fabric lie on each other.

Now you put the right ("beautiful") fabric sides of the two parts on each other, in such a way that the edge of the short side comes exactly to lie in the crease of the long side. Then you fold the supernatant down and stuffs everything well. Now you sew off the crease once over both lengths and one short side (sew on at the beginning and end do not forget!) And leave the side with the crease open.

Now you can turn the reference and get your spelled pillow with it.

And done!

variations

As many positive qualities as spelled chaff have, one can still improve the pillow by, for example, adding dried lavender or rosemary. Apart from the great scent of these two plants (which can easily be grown in any garden and even on the balcony), their oils have special properties that support the effect of the spelled cushion, which I would like to briefly explain to you:

Tip: If you use herbs, make sure that you do not overheat the pillow, because otherwise the essential oils are destroyed and thus ineffective. It does not smell so good either. Of course, if you do not have herbs, you can trickle high quality oil onto the chaff, but do not overdo it!

Lavender is known to have a calming and relaxing effect. The ideal combination for a sleeping pillow. Even with inner restlessness and exhaustion he can work wonders. Laid on his stomach (of course also as tea and inhaled) he counteracts gastrointestinal discomfort. He is also known for its antibacterial effect.

Rosemary is no less effective: it is antiseptic and works against flatulence and menstrual problems, by having a positive effect on the blood circulation and thus the circulation.

Quick Guide:

1. Create a cut for inner and outer cushions
2. Crop with seam allowances
3. Sew inner pillow on 3.5 sides, fill (possibly add herbs) and sew
4. Sew and apply hotel relation
5. Give a pillow of spelled to the hotel - finished!
