preparation

In order to be able to embroider individual letters, names or whole lettering straight, evenly and in the desired size on a fabric, you need a template, with the help of which you draw the embroidery motif in advance on the embroidery ground. To make the template, we recommend using a conventional writing program on your PC.

Tip: This procedure should be used especially for larger projects, where a blurred typeface would disturb. For smaller lettering, the preparation of a stencil may not be worthwhile. In these cases, draw guides with the textile pen and ruler to keep the letters in the embroidery image at the same height. Do not worry: the textile marker is water soluble!

Design of the motif

1. Enter the desired text in the writing program and experiment with different sizes and fonts. Also try the italic spelling. Look in the program bar for shapes such as hearts, arrows, stars, etc. and add them to your motive at will.

2. Make sure that the individual elements are at least as thick on the paper that you can easily cut them out afterwards. For narrower lettering, it is best to use a bold font style.

Attaching the motif

1. Print out your favorites in different sizes. It is quite possible that the subject, which looked great in the writing program, turns out to be unusable for your manual work. That's why you should have several options to choose from.

2. Place the different logos one after the other on the embroidery base and decide which is best.

3. Now cut out the individual elements so that a template is created.

4. Attach the template to the embroidery base to prevent it from slipping. Depending on the quality of the embroidery base, use either sewing needles or adhesive strips. Under certain circumstances, it may be useful to fix the embroidery base in this step. Clamp it in the hoop.

5. Now pick up the textile pen and carefully remove the edges of the stencil.

6. Remove the stencil slowly. Where it seems necessary to you, you can now make freehand corrections.

Preparation of the embroidery materials

1. Put the fabric in the hoop.

2. Split the yarn as needed.

3. Thread the yarn into the eye of the needle.

Embroider letters

Stem or lockstitch

The easiest and fastest way to embroider letters is to use the stitch stitch: //www.zhonyingli.com/stielstich-sticken/. It is decorative and flexible, so that you can easily trace twists. Using the individual stitches, embroider the course of the letter. It's best to start with the straight lines first to gain confidence.

The usual lockstitch is particularly suitable for embroidering letters that have straight lines. Draw the letters with the stitches. Embroider the lockstitch like this: //www.zhonyingli.com/steppstich-sticken/

Medici variation

In order to make the letters drawn with handle or lockstitch more elaborate and decorative, the use of oversticks is suitable.

Manual:

1. Draw the letter first with the handle or lockstitch

2. Pierce the needle at the base of the letter below the first stalk or lockstitch from back to front through the embroidery base

3. Leave about 3 cm of thread left for later sewing after changing the thread

4. Grasp the needle from the front left

5. Guide the needle on the front side above the first stalk or lockstitch from left to right

6. Pass the needle on the front under the second handle or lockstitch from right to left

Repeat steps 4 through 6 on all limbs of the stalk or lockstitch. If you want to make the embroidery picture even more interesting, you can use a different color shade or even a contrasting color for this second step.

Lockstitch with Medici loops

Another variant of the Medici embroidery is the lockstitch with Medici slings. Again, two steps are performed sequentially, for which you can use different colored yarn.

Manual:

1. First draw the letter with the lockstitch

2. Pierce the needle at the base of the letter below the first lockstitch from back to front through the embroidery base

3. Leave about 3 cm of thread left for later sewing after changing the thread

4. Grasp the needle from the front right

5. Pass the needle on the front under the second stitch of the lockstitch from right to left

6. Pick up the needle on the left side and lead it to the right below the previous lockstitch

7. Pick up the needle on the right side and move from right to left underneath the next but one lockstitch

Repeat steps 6 and 7 until all members of the lockstitch are looped. Be careful not to pull the yarn too tight so that the loops remain recognizable and do not lie too close to the lockstitch.

Nodules chain stitch combination

The nodule-chain stitch combination is created by two consecutive work steps. At first, knot stitches are distributed along the letter lines in order to connect them with each other by means of the chain stitch. Therefore, the distance between the nodules should not be too large.

  • The knot stitch described in detail here: //www.zhonyingli.com/knoetchenstich-sticken/
  • Embroider a chain stitch: //www.zhonyingli.com/kettenstich-sticken/

Manual:

1. Pierce the needle at the base of the letter from back to front through the embroidery base

2. Leave about 3 cm of yarn for later sewing

3. Grasp the needle from the front

4. Guide the yarn around the needle two to three times

5. Pierce the needle right next to the opening from which you picked it up, back to the back

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 at the points where a nodule stitch is to be applied. Pay attention to an even distribution of the nodules.

At this point, you can start immediately with the second step. If you want to make the design more eye-catching, you have the opportunity here to change the yarn.

7. Pierce the needle in front of the nodule, which was placed at the base of the letter, from back to front through the embroidery base

8. After changing the yarn, leave about 3 cm of thread for later sewing

9. Grasp the needle from the front

10. Pierce the needle again in the same opening from which the needle was picked up

11. Guide the needle to the back of the fabric and prick the back of the knot back through the fabric

12. Place the yarn in a circle from left to right around the nodule under the needle

13. Grasp the needle from the front and carefully pull the yarn taut

14. Repeat steps 9 to 13 until all nodules are connected by the resulting chain. Be careful not to over-tighten the yarn so that the slings retain the desired size.

Satin stitch with stem stitch contours

The satin stitch with stem stitch contours is often used to draw large and wide letters on larger areas. For narrow, filigree lettering he is less suitable, because through the satin stitch lots of yarn collects on a small area.

Detailed instructions for the satin stitch are available here: //www.zhonyingli.com/plattstich-sticken/

Manual:

1. Pierce the needle from the back to the front through the embroidery base

2. Leave about 3 cm of yarn for later sewing

3. Grasp the needle from the front

4. Guide the needle on the fabric by the desired width of the surface to the right and pierce

5. Guide the needle to the left by the same length on the reverse side of the fabric and pierce it forward a little at a time along the previous stitch.

Repeat this process until the surface of the letter is covered with yarn. Now bypass the contours of the resulting stitch pattern with the conventional stitch stitch.

Satin stitch over splinter stitch

Embroidering the satin stitch over an area of splinter stitch lends volume to the letter so that it stands out from the fabric surface and even partially shadows depending on the light. This variation of the satin stitch is often used for textile handicrafts, for example with initials to refine.

Manual:

1. At the beginning, the entire surface of the letter is provided with splinter stitches. For a detailed description of the splinter stitch, look here: //www.zhonyingli.com/splitterstich-sticken/

Since the splinter stitch is no longer visible after the second step, this is usually done for cost reasons such yarn, which is of lower quality. However, you should make sure that the color has about the same tone as that for the following satin stitch.

2. Pierce the needle on the left side of the letter from the back to the front through the embroidery base

3. Leave about 3 cm of yarn for later sewing

4. Grasp the needle from the front

5. Guide the needle on the fabric to the desired width of the surface to the right and pierce

6. Guide the needle to the left by the same length on the back side of the fabric and pierce it forward a little at an angle to the previous stitch.

Repeat this process until the desired area is covered with yarn.

The ornament

An ornament is usually used to make individual letters, initials or the first letter of a word an eye-catcher. It is best to embroider with a combination of satin stitch and stem stitch. The letter is first drawn with the satin stitch and then decorated with the stem stitch. In our example, the letter has been given contours and a simple frame.

Manual:

1. Create template of the letter with ornaments

2. Attach motif to embroidery base

3. Draw letters with satin stitch

4. Attach embellishments with the stem stitch

The ornament is in itself a striking embroidery picture. If you want to make it even more detailed, you can work with shades or contrasting colors or apply the Medici Variation. It is also very popular to reproduce ivy with the stem stitch, which entwines around the letter. There are no limits to the fantasy of ornament.
