Since many hobby mats inside process mainly jersey fabrics and I am asked again and again, what you can sew from cotton fabric, I show you today how you can easily make a bread basket yourself. In my sewing instructions, I show the most important steps and tips, as well as your very quickly comes to your own sewn bread basket. This is not only good at the Sunday breakfast table, but is also a beautiful, unique gift - best of course, already filled! Even for the upcoming Easter, such a basket is ideal for hiding eggs.

material

In this case, it is best to use a non-stretchy fabric such as cotton, which I reinforce with a non-woven fabric to achieve the necessary stability. I would like to use a motif fabric with owls on the outside of my basket, so the "inner part" will be divided into three, but you can also just take two or even just one fabric. So if you want to sew your own bread basket yourself, you will also have the opportunity to get creative again.

Depending on the size of your basket you need different amounts of material. Unfortunately, I can not give any details for your purchase. You do not need all the material in one piece - as with patchwork pieces of fabric can be sewn together and you can also process your fabric remnants. If the "edge" is to be one piece, you need about 65 cm of fabric in length with a plate size of about 20 cm in diameter. Therefore, it makes sense to pre-fabricate the pattern and then to consider what quantities of material you might want to buy.

Tip: Always think again with motivic fabrics and try out, with which side is sewn up, so that the motive is then not upside down!

patterns

First I make a pattern. For this I simply take a plate the size of my choice for the "bottom" of the bread basket, turn it over, draw the outline with a pen on paper and cut out the resulting circle. For smaller cups, you can also take a cereal bowl, for example.

For the "edge" of the Brotkörbchens I now have to calculate the scope.

Circumference = diameter x ">

cut out

When cutting, we also have to calculate the seam allowance. I like to take a little more than half a cm per seam, so in total 1.5 cm are added to each piece of fabric. I attach my pattern with some pins on the fabric and then cut with appropriate seam allowance.

You need for the "bottom":

  • 1x outer fabric
  • 1x inner fabric
  • 2x fleece

You need for the "edge":

  • 1x outer fabric
  • 1x inner fabric (optional 2/3 inner fabric, 1/3 motif fabric)
  • 2x fleece

For stability

Now the individual fabric parts are reinforced with non-woven fabric. Allow the pieces to cool briefly after ironing, so that the "glue" in the ironing fleece can bond well with the cotton fabric, then nothing slips later.

Tip: Attach the non-woven fabric to the seam allowance for optimum stability!

Sew the basket

Now it's finally time! I first sew the two pieces of fabric together for the inside. In doing so, I make sure that my owls are upside down, since I want to fold them out later.

Now I iron over the left side of the fabric and fold the seam apart. On the right side of the fabric I still bring beautiful decorative seams and spare me so called the Endeln, also called serging.

All other fabric edges should be trimmed so that the fabric will not fray later and keep your basket long and beautiful. I use a simple zig-zag stitch with a width of 0.5 mm.

Tip: Even with decorative seams, it is important to keep the final result in mind and to ensure once again that the seams are not turned upside down!

The edge"

In the next step, I fold the "edge" once the width and sew the two ends together with a simple straight stitch.

You are welcome to iron out the seam from the left here as well. This step applies to both the inside and the outside part.

Two baskets emerge

Now it gets a bit tricky. The "edge" must be connected to the "ground". Here are two separate cups arise. Once for the outer part, once for the inner part. So that the fabrics do not slip, I attach the "edge" on the "floor" by means of eight pins. If you are unsure, you can also take more than eight. Then I sew both parts together again with a simple straight stitch.

Make two out of two

The two baskets are now inserted into each other so that the right (ie the beautiful) fabric sides are together.

Here I sew again with straight stitch in about 0.7 cm wide almost once around. I leave about 7 cm open so I can turn the basket.

Through the opening I now pull out both cups. The inner part is now inserted into the outer part and pulled something right. Then I sew around again and thus close the turn-around. I have chosen this again for a decorative stitch.

And done!

Finally, I fold the upper third with my beautiful owl motif to the outside. That was really fun and I think, I'll sew a few Easter baskets tomorrow!

variations

Of course that's not all. With such a basket you can let off steam creatively. For example, you can embroider the fabric in advance or sew on a silk ribbon and then make a nice bow. I can well imagine a patchwork basket of scraps for my son's toys.

Tips for quick readers:

  • Create cut for bottom (+ seam allowance) and edge (= diameter x 3.14 + seam allowance)
  • Cutting with seam allowance
  • Close edge and sew to bottom (two separate cups)
  • Sew the cups to each other on the right, omit the opening (about 7 cm)
  • Turn and sew together
  • Turn over upper third - done!
