We show how to build a bed with little effort from Europalletten.Den rough charm, the upgraded old factories or completely gutted apartments have to make comfortable and even comfortable is a claim of "Industrial Style". This trend combines upcycling and DIY to achieve the greatest possible individualism. Making something new out of old or using things is what many do-it-yourselfers and DIY enthusiasts always love. Here we present you a bed of europallets - sleeping in industrial style.

Tool & Material

  • euro pallets
  • Drill / cordless screwdriver with wood drill
  • Grinding machine (orbital sander or eccentric sander)
  • Sandpaper in different grain sizes
  • Screws with matching bits
  • Flat connector and angle connector
  • clamps
  • Wood seal or paint
  • Malerflies or felt tape
  • Safety equipment (gloves, respiratory protection, safety glasses, hearing protection)
  • Dustpan & broom + vacuum cleaner
  • Saw (jigsaw, foxtail)
  • Large cardboard or blankets to be laid under for assembly
  • At least one more person to hold

Slatted frame, mattress and any decoration are not part of this manual, here is the guide for the bed frame made of Euro pallets.

The pallets

A standardized Europallet has the dimensions (according to DIN EN 13698-1) 120 x 80 cm with a height of 14.4 cm. Meanwhile, DIY stores have recognized that this is a much sought after material and sell it now for about 17 € each.
Cheaper to get but also on classifieds portals on the Internet or you ask companies in a commercial area for old / used Euro pallets, these costs usually between 4 and 10 € each.

You should remember that you put the pallets at least twice to not immediately on the floor. Ideal would be three layers, so you can get up to about the height of a normal bed and so can more comfortable to get in and out of bed later.

What to look for "> Alternatives

An alternative (especially priced) are disposable pallets. However, these are not standardized in size or material. Here it can happen that you will not find two identical pallets. If you have a lot of time and a salesman with a lot of patience, you can spend a lot of time searching for the right pallets, but most of the time you will have to cut a lot in the end.

Take a close look at the pallets! Coarse dirt can be easily removed by the subsequent grinding work anyway. Make sure that the pallets are whole. Small bumps, cracks, chipping are not so bad and will be repaired later anyway. However, if you notice oil or chemical residue on the pallet, you should stay away from it. Just as you can see fresh food marks from woodworms or similar insects. There should be no bark on the wood, as it can also hide vermin.

manual

Make yourself a sketch
There are several ways to personalize your vintage bedstead. You should know how much space you have and how much space you need.

Tip: If you are not sure, make a model out of paper.

Note:

  • Single bed or a double bed
  • Width & length of the slatted frame and mattress

The base of Euro pallets should be at least as large as the space required for the slatted frame, but better still a little larger. There are a lot of possibilities and variations on how to combine europallets with each other. Here are 2 simple ways to build a bed of europallets.

Variant 1: 2 x 2 m
You need at least four pallets, eight are better - to get a little more distance to the ground.

Variant 2: 2.4 x 2.4 m
With 6 pallets, some connecting plate and a few screws, the huge sleeping area is ready. The easiest way to build a large bed frame made of europallets.

Variant 3: 1.6 x 2 m
Create a comfortable bed with 4 pallets, which also has 2 mini bedside tables.

Variant 4: 2.07 x 2.4 m
With this variant you need 6 pallets per layer. Two of them have to be sawed, but nothing needs to be thrown away.

preparation

It is a good idea to put together the pallets and to see which palette works, fits together or if there are unsightly spots to hide.

Make small markings on the bottom to be able to reconstruct the order and position later. No matter which pattern or type of assortment of pallets to a bed you have decided, the first step is the same for all:

grind

The best way to do the sanding outdoors, because in this work a lot of dirt and dust. Be sure to use respiratory protection and gloves. Work with different sandpaper grits, start with the coarse and then become finer and finer. In between, you should brush off the pallets and vacuum to get to the end of a clean result.

In any case, sand all visible areas thoroughly, so that you do not injure yourself later and your bedding takes no harm. With the grinding you can stop when no splinters stand out from the wood and can stroke them over the smooth wood by hand, without feeling any rough spots.

Assembly

If the space and the manpower allow it, it is best to assemble each individual layer in the opposite direction - it is best to get to all the points to be connected

V1 - Square and Practical
Position the pallets as shown and any other position just opposite. Connect the individual pallets at the bottom with angle iron, mounting plates, flat iron and screws.

Tip: If you want to do without a slatted frame, you will need to cover the hole in the middle with some residual wood or similar. Close as the mattress otherwise sinks into it and wears itself off more quickly.

V2 - The king size bed made of europallets
Here, 3 pallets must be connected to each other on the 1.2 m sides, this is done twice and then connects the two parts together. However, it must be sanded very thoroughly here, because later on all sides the pallets look out.

V3 - Small but nice
In this model, two pallets each have to be connected at the short side and two pallets at the long side. After that, both are put together like a misshapen "T".

Here you will find left and right next to the headboard or a practical storage for smartphone, jewelry or handkerchiefs.

V4 - The noble bed with extras
Cut through two of the pallets along the middle block lengthwise. This leaves just over half the width of the pallet and still has two feet. Side by side come a whole, a "half" and a whole range. The same again underneath. All parts must be conscientiously and stably connected with the appropriate sheet metal and screws.

If you want to build more than one layer you do not have to turn the bottom layer after assembly, but first the second one. This will give you a larger opening at the bottom of the foot where you can later place boxes. The same option is also available on the side, but here you still have to saw through the edge strips on the underside of both pallets.

To ensure that the layers are firmly seated on each other, they must be screwed together again. Although the pallets by their own weight almost can not slip, but you should still make sure that all parts are securely connected.

bonus

From two of the cut parts you can easily build a bevelled headboard for the bed. Place the two pieces on the headboard and screw tight. If the transition is not quite consistent, you can also cut off or sand down the corners.

Tip: Cover the remaining pieces with foam and cover with a large piece of material. Alternatively, you can also put pillows here.

Painting or painting

In order to protect the wood from wear and tear, it should be sealed with a paint, oil or hard wax suitable for living spaces. If you do not like the wood look, the bed frame can also be painted very well with paint. A protective layer should also seal the wood afterwards.

Tip: If the bed of Euro pallets is not yet rustic enough, the wood can also burn off before sealing. But this should be done outdoors and with the utmost caution to ignite no band. Brush the wood again after that and go over it again with some sandpaper over it to not have the "smoke flavor" forever in the bedroom.

When the Euro pallet bed is ready

We recommend the use of a slatted frame, this will definitely spare the mattress, as the gaps between the wooden slats do not provide sufficient stability.
So that the slatted frame does not slip, you can either clamp it with small sticks or screw it directly to the underframe (with expensive models, this is better foreseen).

Throw away nothing!

If you've got one or two more pallets on offer to find the right ones or if there's anything left over when sawing, just do not throw it away. Even from the "remains" you can still tinker something. From the mini side table, over the spice rack to the wine holder, there are many possibilities to continue upcycling.
