Canning with tin cans - instructions & ideas

  • Bee from tin can
  • Cans Tablelight
  • crown pot

Upcycling is very popular among DIY fans - from old to new! So you can make a lot of tin cans and of these are a lot in everyday life. In this tutorial, we'll show you three creative ideas for crafting food cans - from bee to lantern to pot with crowns.

Bee from tin can

You need to craft:

  • tin can
  • Nail and hammer
  • yellow acrylic paint and brush
  • black tape
  • four buttons
  • thread
  • scissors
  • plastic packaging
  • black edding
  • hot glue

manual

Step 1: Take the empty can (of course without lid) and remove the label. Remains of paper or glue can be removed by soaking the can in hot water for a few minutes.

Step 2: Now you have to punch five holes in the can. For this you pick up a nail and a hammer. A hole is needed as a suspension - opposite to the underside of the bee you punch in four holes for the four legs. Place the holes as shown in the picture.

3rd step: Now the bee is painted. Acrylic paint is the best option. Once the paint has dried through, the strips are stuck with black tape, unless you also want to paint them.

Step 4: Then cut four woolen threads in the same length. Make a knot at the end of each thread.

Step 5: Now the wings are cut. Using a felt-tip pen, draw the outlines of the wings on the underside of the food packaging. Then cut out the wings.

Note: Under warm water, you can easily wash off remnants of the felt-tip pen.

Step 6: Now build the bee together. Thread the four threads through the leg holes. The knots prevent inside, that the threads slip through. At the end of each one button is connected.

Step 7: Thread another, longer thread through the top of the suspension hole and fasten it with a knot as well.

8: Step: The wings and the crown cap eyes are each attached to the can with a blob of hot glue.

Step 9: Finish with a mouth and eyes with a felt-tip pen.

Cans Tablelight

You need to craft:

  • tin can
  • felt-tip pen
  • Nail and hammer
  • Spray paint or paint
  • dekomaterial
  • tealight

manual

Step 1: Remove the label and all glue residue from the tin can. Under warm water these can be easily removed.

Step 2: Now consider a pattern or a motif, which should show the later holes. Use a pen to mark the respective points for the holes on the tin or you can draw lines where you can later distribute the holes as you like.

Step 3: After that beat the holes carefully into the can with a hammer. Be very careful that you do not slip off.

Step 4: The tin can now be sprayed or painted with colored lacquer or acrylic paint. Important: If you use spray paint, you should apply it at least to the open window. It would be even better, because of the gases, outside in the garden or on the balcony. Wait with the decorating until the paint is completely dry.

Step 5: Finally, you can give the canned lantern an individual touch with selected deco elements. You can tie a wide cloth loop around the tin, as well as bast or natural fiber tape for the right DIY look. Or you stick the box with small flowers, felt hearts, lace or borders. Let your creativity take over your mind and body!

crown pot

You need to craft:

  • tin can
  • Side cutter and pincers
  • a sheet of paper
  • pen
  • scissors
  • Acrylic paint and brush
  • hot glue
  • puschel
  • Decorative elements
  • Gloves and possibly safety goggles
  • duct tape

Manual:

Step 1: At the beginning, the label of the empty can is replaced - the quickest way to do this is with the help of warm water.

Step 2: Then you need a template for the crowns. Take a sheet of paper and wrap it around the can. Cut the paper so that the ends do not overlap and the width of the paper has the dimensions of the circumference of the can. The protruding surfaces at the top and bottom can also be cut off.

Step 3: Then the sheet of paper is folded. Fold the strip once in the middle. Then the paper is folded in half again and then again. Unfold it again, you have eight equal sections on the paper - that means the crown will later have eight points.

Step 4: Now cut the prongs - leave the paper folded and cut a jag in all layers at one end.

Step 5: Use the stylus to transfer the spikes to the can. Of course, the peaks are up there, where the opening is. The paper can be attached to the box with an adhesive strip so that nothing slips.

Step 6: Now you should be careful. With the side cutter cut from the opening along the lines in the can. Once you have cut through the thicker edge, the rest of the can is not that difficult anymore. Cut out all the points in this way.

Important: The edges are very sharp, so you should wear gloves in this project. The metal can also jump off when cutting something, so you should also wear protective goggles during this step.

Step 7: Now the points are bent outwards. For this, take the pliers.

Step 8: Now it is being decorated. The tin can be painted at lightning speed with acrylic paint (or spray paint) at will. Once the paint is completely dry, you can attach more decorative elements.

To protect against sharp points, we recommend small pompoms, which you stick with hot glue. So nothing really can happen.
