Already with the babies the time of the sweet little dresses begins. No wardrobe should be missing if the little girl moves in after the birth with the family. And if mommies, omis, or aunts take a knitting needle, then it will not stay with a baby dress.

We join with a self-knitted baby dress of understandable knitting joy. Our children's dress is very simple and therefore easy to knit for beginners.

The instructions for the baby dress are presented in size 56. That's about the same as a 1-2 month old baby. But that does not mean that you can not knit this baby dress in the following sizes. The basic pattern always stays the same. They just hit a few stitches and knit more rows in length. The sleeve neckline is always knit the same.

For our instructions, we have chosen a pattern that is just as suitable for warm days as it is for cooler ones. The children's dress consists of a skirt, a bib and straps. So you can wear it on warm days with and without a T-shirt. Often only the body under the dress is enough, and the baby looks equally chic. And the long-sleeved shirt also looks very pretty underneath.

For your help, we have created a small sewing pattern for the children's dress. All centimeters for size 56 are shown on this pattern. For each additional size you have to add 3 centimeters to each length.

For this you should knit a stitch. You can calculate exactly how many stitches you want for 1 or more. 3 cm with your yarn.

Material and preparation

When knitting baby clothes, you should pay particular attention to the wool or yarn that you process. Babies love not only soft and cuddly, the yarn should also be light and pollutant free.

In wool shops there are special baby wool to buy, also online. This wool or yarn is specially tailored to the needs of the little ones. For the warm season is a soft cotton blended yarn, for the cold days there are very cuddly new wool yarns, especially for the little baby.

We decided on a summer kids dress and knitted it with a very soft cotton blend yarn. Our yarn corresponds to the wool Rico Baby Cotton Soft by Wolle Rödel. It is made of 50% cotton and polyacrylic. Therefore, it is also very easy to care for and wonderfully soft.

We knitted with a needle size of 3.5 mm.

According to our instructions you need:

  • 130 grams cotton mixed yarn with a running length of 230 m / 100 grams
  • 2 short needles with needle size 3.5 mm
  • 1 circular needle also with a needle size of 3.5 mm

Techniques & Patterns

The children's dress is knitted in two pieces. The front part and the back part. These are sewn together at the end and held together with two knitted Trägerchen. The basic pattern consists of right and left stitches - smooth right pattern. The back row knits on the right, the left row is on the back row.

Small pear pattern

The straps and the edging on the sleeve neckline as well as on the sewn-on bag were worked in a pear pattern.

You always knit in alternation:

  • 1 stitch right and
  • 1 stitch left.

In the back row, all the stitches are knit oppositely as they appear.

cord stop

For the attack we have processed a special pattern: the cord stop.
He actually has the character of a cord and thus brings some momentum already in the front row.

We did not invent this particular drawstring stop, but copied ourselves from "knitting with eliZZZa". He is very simple, but has a great effect. You must knit this cord stop with two short knitting needles. Because the knitting work is not turned, it is only pushed back and forth.

1st row

Cast on 3 stitches on a short needle. Do not turn the work. To do this, push the work on the needle to the other end of the needle. Now the work thread is on the left side, but that's not interesting. When continuing to knit, simply pull the thread back to the first stitch behind the work. Do not stab the first stitch at the back, but at the front.

Knit all three stitches to the right. Push the needle to the left again.

In this continuation knit all 3 stitches to the right and push from end to end for a new row.

When the desired length is reached, proceed as follows:

2nd row

Bind off the first 2 stitches.

The unbutted stitch is the first stitch or edge stitch of knitting work. Now get a new stitch from each stitch thread (see picture) with the thread of work on the needle. Continue until you have created all new stitches.

Turn the work over

3rd row

The stitch pickup was a right row. They continue knitting with a left row. All left stitches are knitted on the left side.

Tip: Crossed left stitches To facilitate insertion into the back stitch, it is advisable to slightly turn the front of the stitch with your thumb to the left and fix it. This makes it easier to pierce the rear part of the mesh.

4th row

Knit all stitches right crossed.

5th row

All stitches left crossed work. The stitches must therefore be worked in an interlaced manner because they are very long in normal knitting technique and result in an unclean stitch pattern. That's the whole art of the cord stroke.

A clean edge mesh

How to knit a clean edge stitch, we show you in our magazine: Knit edge stitches - learned quickly. When children's dress we have all border stitches worked as a ket edge.

Baby dress knit in size 56

You can decide with which stop you will start the children's dress. For the drawstring you must knit the drawstring until you can pick up 72 stitches on a new needle. These 72 meshes work exactly as we described in the basic pattern.

Continue from the 6th row as described.

Skirt of the dress

For a normal stitch, hit 72 stitches.

Knit the first 5 rows in a pear pattern. From the 6th row starts for both attacks the skirt of the children's dress.

6th row after the stop

We have changed the thread color from this row. Work smoothly right to the 10th row in the basic pattern.

  • Outline right-hand stitches
  • Back row left stitches

10th row

From the 10th row begins the decrease on the right and left edge of the skirt of the dress.

The first three decreases will be after:

  • 4 inches
  • 8 centimeters and
  • Made 12 centimeters

To take off:

  • edge stitch
  • 1. Lift off the stitch
  • Knit 2 stitches on the right
  • Pull the lifted stitch over the knitted stitch.
  • knit all other stitches to the right
  • The last two stitches in front of the edge stitch
    Knitting to the right
  • Repeat this decrease a total of 3 times.

Picture stitch marker

Tip: To see where you picked up, you can put a stitch marker at this point.

After the 3rd acceptance:

  • Knit 4 rows as normal

Then knit two stitches on the right and left side of the knitwork three times in each 4th row on the left and right of the knitwork (as described on the skirt).
The skirt width of a page is reduced by the decreases by 5 centimeters.
After last picking, knit one row back and forth.

Sleeve neckline - the bib

The skirt of the children's dress is now ready knitted. It continues with the bib part of the dress.

Here is removed at the sleeve neck. To make it a nice visible decrease, we knitted the first 5 stitches after the edge stitch with a pearl pattern and then removed.

Now knit like this:

  • edge stitch
  • Knit 5 stitches in a pear pattern
  • Take off 1 stitch
  • Knit 1 stitch on the right
  • Pull the lifted stitch over the knitted stitch.
  • Knit at the needle end with the right stitches to the 7th and 8th stitch.
  • Knit 2 stitches together to the right
  • 5 stitches in pear work
  • 1 edge stitch
  • Turn to work

In each back row, knit the middle part with left stitches. The pear pattern work as usual opposite. The decreases take place only in the rows with right stitches. Repeat this decrease for the bib of the baby dress 12 times in total.

Then work 7 rows in a pear pattern. We knitted these 7 rows with a second thread color. On the front of the dress in this pearlescent border on the left and the right side each incorporate 1 buttonhole.

It works like this:

  • edge stitch
  • Knit 2 stitches
  • 1 envelope
  • Knit 2 stitches together

Working on the left side of the border. In the back row, knit the envelope normally as a stitch. You must follow the pear pattern to see if the envelope turns into a right or left stitch.

After the 7th row, buff off all the stitches. Knit the second part of the baby dress in exactly the same way.

The basic structure for the children's dress is ready.

Knit straps

Front and back are held together by little carriers. To knit this way:

  • Cast on 7 stitches
  • edge stitch
  • Work 5 stitches in a pear pattern
  • edge stitch

Knit bag

So that the dress gets its special chic, we knitted on the front still a small bag.

  • Cast on 27 stitches
  • Knit 5 rows in a pear pattern

6th row

  • edge stitch
  • 3 stitches in pear pattern
  • knit all other stitches to the right.
  • At the end of the row work again 3 stitches of pearl pattern
  • 1 edge stitch

Of course you can make the bag as big as you want.

Our bag has the dimensions:

  • 10 inches wide
  • 7 inches high

After knitting, sew the bag onto the dress with a fine thread at the back of the stitches. You have now finished knitting all the pieces. Before you sew the front and back together, you should sew all loose work threads. After sewing the two large knitted pieces together, sew the straps to the back piece.

At the end of the carrier you have to sew another button. However, we have not chosen a ready-bought button, but a small white flower crocheted as a button. The same flower we crocheted and sewn for the bag.

Of course you can also modify the baby dress. For this you can knit the borders with the pearl pattern bigger. Instead of sewing on a bag, you can also embroider flowers. Or little beetles. Your imagination is the limit.
