For mum's, omis, aunts and girlfriends there is nothing better than to pamper the new earthlings. This includes knitting a baby jacket. With our free knitting instructions you will be able to spoil a little baby.

A self-made baby jacket has always been one of the classics of baby equipment. It is often given as a gift for the birth of the little Wonneproppens or to his baptism. Such gifts also retain their eternal value, they are not simply disposed of. Usually they are kept in the memory box, with which the sprout moves many years later into his own home.

Knit baby jacket | Size 56/62

For our baby jacket, we have chosen a very simple pattern that gives the jacket its own character. Again, this guide is designed so that even knit beginners can knit a baby jacket.

Material and preparation

The wool or yarn that you will choose for a baby jacket should, of course, be aimed at the little child. In other words, you should only use baby wool in babies. Only then can you be sure that the yarn is free of chemical substances that can eventually lead to skin intolerances.

Cotton clothes or 100% acrylic yarns are always ideal for baby clothes. Both fibers are soft, light and above all easy to care for. They do not fumble and are also very well tolerated on the skin.

We have chosen a yarn that corresponds to the line 345 COTTON BABY by trendgarne.de. It is a high quality, very soft and easy-care baby cotton yarn. We knitted with a needle size of 4.5 mm. Even though only 3.0 mm are specified on the band, we have decided for a stronger needle. This gives the baby jacket a very soft character.

In addition, our knitter knits tight. That is, who knits tight, should work with thicker knitting needles . If you knit very loosely, you can use the specified needle size. It is important that you make a stitch with your yarn.

Knitting tension:

For our stitch test, we struck 20 meshes over a width of 10 centimeters. When knitting your yarn with a stitch, you can now calculate exactly how many stitches you will need to make for size 56/62 .

According to our information you need:

  • 100 grams of cotton yarn (with a running length of 180 meters / 50 grams)
  • Knitting needles of 4.5 mm
  • 1 crochet hook of thickness 2.5 mm
  • 1 darning needle to sew together
  • 1 tape measure

Knit basic pattern for baby jacket

Smooth right

In the right row, right stitches are knit in the back row and left stitches in the back row.

Pattern on the right

In the pattern on the crotch right, only right stitches are knitted in the back and the back row.

star Print

The star pattern consists of 4 rows, which are always repeated. The number of stitches must be divisible by four + 1 stitch + edge stitch. The asterisks are knitted in the back row, but you can see them in the back row, in which you knit on the right.

1st row - back row:

  • edge stitch
  • knit all stitches to the right
  • edge stitch

2nd row - back row:

  • edge stitch
  • 1 stitch left

  • Knit 3 stitches together as follows:
  • put the working thread in front of the three stitches ...

... knit off the stitches on the left, but do not allow the stitches to slip off the needle, they will remain on the needle ...

... put an envelope on the working needle ...

... and knit all three stitches together on the left side.

Orient yourself to our pictures.

This is what your current knitting result looks like.

  • 1 stitch left

  • Knit 3 stitches left to the asterisk

  • the series ends with:
  • 3 stitches left

These four rows form the star pattern. They are repeated continuously.

Knit buttonhole

In our beginner's guides, there is a very detailed guide on how to knit a buttonhole. The buttonhole in our instructions is knitted over 3 stitches . That is, in the outward row 3 stitches are chained off, in the back row these 3 stitches are taken up again.

Knit baby jacket | manual

Not every baby is the same size and equally strong. There are size charts that are based on the body measurements of the child. We at Talu.de have created a size chart for baby clothes. At this you can orient yourself and knit the baby jacket according to the centimeters. The descriptions in our guide are only guidelines.

The back part

  • attack
  • Cast on 49 stitches + 2 edge stitches = 51 stitches

With the number of stitches, we also oriented ourselves to the star pattern. That is, the asterisk pattern requires a mesh divisible by 4 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.

1st row to 10th row:

  • only knit right stitches in pattern to the right

11th row:

This is a row with right stitches. The first row of the four rows of star pattern begins with this row

12th row:

Knit the 12th row as the 2nd row of the pattern.

13th row:

  • only right stitches

14th row:

Knit this series like the 4th row of the pattern. From the 15th row, knit 8 centimeters in the pattern. Then knit back to the right until the back reaches 23 centimeters. Here begins the neckline.

Knit neckline at the back

1st row:

  • edge stitch
  • 19 stitches on the right
  • Bind off 11 stitches
  • 19 stitches on the right
  • edge stitch

2nd row = beginning of a shoulder (back row)

  • edge stitch
  • Knit 19 sts left

3rd row:

  • Bind off 4 stitches
  • edge stitch

4th row:

  • edge stitch
  • Knit 15 stitches left

5th row:

  • Bind off all stitches

The 2nd shoulder is knitted in the same order.

Knit left front

Attack:

  • 29 stitches + 2 edge stitches = cast on 31 stitches

Work to the neckline like the back. First, the cuff in frilly right. Then knit 8 centimeters in the asterisk pattern, then work to the right until the total height of 20 centimeters . In the last 4 centimeters, the shoulder and the neckline are knitted.

Slimming for the neckline

It is always taken in the back row.

1st row of bows:

  • Bind off 5 stitches
  • knit the remaining stitches to the right.

Back row:

  • knit all stitches on the left

2. Abutment series:

  • Bind off 4 stitches
  • knit the remaining stitches to the right.

Back row:

  • left stitches

3. Abutment:

  • Bind off 3 stitches
  • knit the remaining stitches to the right.

Back row:

  • left stitches

4. Combination series:

  • Bind off 2 stitches
  • knit remaining stitches all to the right

Back row:

  • left stitches

shoulder

Work up as many rounds in stocking st, until you reach the same shoulder height as the back piece.

Knit right front

This right front part is worked exactly opposite to the left front part . This applies to the stop, the cuffs, the pattern rows, the smooth right-hand knitted rows and the neckline with the shoulder. We knitted buttonholes in this front piece . Of course, you can also knit these into the left front part, depending on whether you are knitting the baby jacket for a boy or a girl.

Buttonhole rows

1st row:

  • edge stitch
  • Knit 3 stitches on the right
  • Bind off 3 stitches
  • knit the remaining stitches of the row all to the right

Back row:

  • knit all the stitches left to the chipped stitches
  • Put 3 slings on the needle
  • Knit 3 stitches on the right
  • edge stitch

2nd row:

  • edge stitch
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • work the 3rd stitch right hand folded
  • Knit off the 3 loops on the right
  • knit the following stitch right crossed
  • the remaining stitches of the needle all work right

In this episode all 3 buttonholes are knitted. How much you attach them is up to you. We always knit 6 rows or 3 rounds to the next buttonhole as usual.

Knit sleeves

Both sleeves are knit the same way.

Fence row:

  • Cast on 28 stitches + 2 edge stitches = 30 stitches

The cuffs from the sleeves we knitted just as long as the back and the two front pieces. After that you only work smoothly right. For the sleeve width 9 times 2 stitches are increased.

The first increase starts 1 centimeter after the cuff. Then add 1 stitch to every 2 centimeters on both sides. The sleeve width counts top 46 stitches + 2 edge stitches. The items of the baby jacket knit are now finished.

Completion of the baby jacket

Sew the work threads on all parts. When stitching the baby jacket, start with the shoulders of the front pieces to the back.

Then sew on the sleeves.

Now the sleeves are sewn down from the armpit. At the end, sew the front pieces together with the back piece. So that the baby jacket receives a beautiful frame, we have the finished sewn jacket crocheted.

Start at the bottom corner and crochet a stitch in each stitch until you have crocheted around the entire baby jacket. We worked two fixed stitches in the first and last stitch. In the second row we crocheted the mouse teeth.

Crochet mouse teeth

  • 1 fixed loop
  • 3 air meshes
  • Crochet a tight stitch in the 1st of these three stitches
  • work a tight stitch in the following stitch
  • then again a tight loop with mouse teeth,
  • a solid mesh,
  • a mesh with mouse teeth,
  • a tight knit

The Mäusezähnchen are always worked in every second solid mesh. You can use this series to work the neckline to make it nice and round. Just skip a tight loop. Now all you have to do is sew on the buttons, sew on the last work threads and the baby jacket is ready.
