For babies, the clothes must not only be pretty, they should also be practical. That's why even knitted clothes are ideal for the little worms. Knitting baby pants is therefore an absolute must for knitters.

Knitted baby pants made of soft and fluffy wool, eye-catching and warmth test at the same time. They keep the stomach and back warm and do not cut the little baby anywhere. Another aspect of self-knitted baby pants is that it grows with you.

We have put together a free guide for beginners for our baby pants, which can be easily reworked without special knowledge of knitting.

Material and preparation

The most important task of a baby pants is that it warms the little babies well. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to a good yarn. Special baby wool is noticeably softer and fluffier than traditional wool. It can consist of natural fibers or synthetic fibers. For the winter a Baby Soft Merino wool is suitable, for summery temperatures you can use special baby cotton yarns.

We have chosen a pair of baby pants for a yarn that equals the wool Siena by Wolle Rödel. Siena is a high quality and extra fine merino wool. It has a length of 135 m / 50 g and is available in many soft and strong colors.
We knitted with a needle size of 3, although it is recommended with a thickness of up to 4 mm.

If you would prefer to resort to a super-soft blend of polyacrylic and polyamide, the yarn Rico Baby Classic by Wolle Rödel will serve you well. Also she is knitted with the needle size 3.

According to our instructions you will need for a baby pants size 0 - 3 months:

• 100 grams of wool
• 1 needle size 3 mm
• 1 needle size 3.5 mm or 2 circular needles of 3 mm and 3.5 mm, maximum rope length 40 cm
• tape measure
• darning needle

Basic pattern - half patent

For the cuffs, we have chosen the half-patent pattern. It is very elastic and very comfortable to wear.

The body and the legs are only knitted on the right for these baby pants.

Stitch with a straight stitch. The half-patent pattern in rounds consists of 2 rounds.

Tip: To always see the start of the round immediately, you can hang a stitch marker in front of the first stitch.

1 round

This is just the basic series.

• 1 stitch on the right
• 1 stitch left
• 1 stitch on the right
• 1 stitch left

2nd round

• 1 envelope
• Take off 1 stitch on the right (that is, the right stitch has an envelope), the cover is in front of the right stitch
• Knit 1 st. Left
• 1 envelope
• Take off 1 stitch on the right
• Knit 1 st. Left

shortened:

• Take off 1 right st with an envelope
• 1 Ma left
• Take off 1 right st with an envelope
• 1 Ma left
• Knit the whole round in this order.

3rd round

• Knit the right stitch with the envelope on the right
• Knit the left stitch on the left
• 1 stitch with an envelope on the right

Knit the entire round until the start of the round in this order. The 2nd and the 3rd round work continuously.

• Cast on 88 stitches with needle size 3 mm
• Close the round.
• Alternating in the first round: 1 Ma right, 1 Ma left, 1 Ma right, 1 Ma left

Starting in the second round with the half-patent pattern in rounds. The attack can be knitted directly on the short circular needle or on a double needle play.

Tip: Impact on a double-needle play: First cast all stitches on a long needle or a circular needle.

From the first round the stitches are knitted on the four needles. Before closing the round, please make sure that the needles do not twist. Just put on the table and sort. Now close the round.

To make a nice transition at the end of the round, knit a few stitches (2-4) from the 1st needle to the 4th needle (the last one).
These stitches, which are then too much, simply put back on the 1st needle after 4 rounds. Knit 3 centimeters in the rib pattern. If you want, you can knit a row of holes for a drawstring after the first 3 centimeters. But does not have to be.

It starts with needle no. 1:

Row of holes 2nd round

All stitches knit as they appear. Pull off the right stitches resulting from the knitting together with an envelope on the right. Knit the envelope of the preliminary round as the left stitch. This then gives the hole for the cord. Knit the left stitches normal left.

After the two rows of holes, all the stitches are now as usual in the half-patent one above the other. There are another 3 centimeters knitted for the cuffs in the half-patent. The cuff is now 6.5 inches

body

After the cuff the body of baby pants is knitted. To do this, change the knitting needles. It continues to knit with the needle size 3.5. Simply knit each needle with the new needle size, so these are automatically replaced after a round.

1 round

Increase 2 stitches on each needle. You can increase these meshes freely distributed. We doubled the 2nd stitch and the penultimate stitch on each needle.

Tip for the stitch increase: Lift the intermediate thread of the preliminary round and place it on the left needle. Then knit off to the right. For this, the stitch is inserted from the back and knitted.

After the increase, the round counts 96 stitches. Knit this 96 stitches 14 inches high. Always right-hand stitches. The trousers have a length of 20 centimeters with the cuffs.

Step gusset

So that the diaper has enough space and the baby pants are comfortable, we knit quite easily a small gusset. For this crotch gusset, set the front and back center. To make work easier, simply place 3 stitches on the first needle from the second needle. You do the same with the needles 3 and 4.

Now set two stitch markers so that 1 and 2 of needle 1 and 2, respectively, indicate the center. The same goes for needle 3 and 4. In addition to these 2 stitches, we will now add more stitches.

Increase: In each 2nd round take a stitch next to the middle stitches on the right and left.

1 round

Increase 1 stitch next to the middle two stitches (from needle 1 and 2) on the right and left. The gusset now counts 4 stitches.

2nd round

3rd round

Increase 1 stitch on the right and left next to the 4 gusset stitches = 6 stitches

4th round

no increase

5th round

next to the 6 gussets increase 1 stitch on the right and left = 8 stitches.

6th round

no increase

Continue working until the gusset counts 12 stitches. Always take one round and knit the next round without increasing.

In the round after the last increase, the middle 10 stitches of the crotch gusset are chained off.

legs

There should now be 22 stitches on each needle. This means that 1 leg has 44 mesh circumference. The legs are now working separately. To do this, place the stitches of one leg on a long circular needle or a very long safety pin.

The remaining stitches of the other leg are distributed over the needle play. So there are 11 stitches on each needle. In order to be able to knit the transition in the crotchless gauze, simply put 4 stitches on the first needle before the crotch. After a few rounds, you can put them back, so that the same number of stitches on each needle.

The legs are straight up to a length of 9 centimeters knitted.

leg cuffs

For the leg cuff take 2 stitches per needle. In the same way you did after the cuff. Always knit two stitches to the right. There are now 9 stitches on each needle. Then work on the next 2 centimeters in the half-patent.

Bind off all stitches.

For the second leg of the baby pants, pick up the entire set stitches on the needle play and work this leg just like the first leg.

Sew the step gusset together

Now only the open gusset must be sewn together at the crotch.

Sew all work threads. If you have decided on a drawstring, pull it through the hole pattern. The baby pants are ready in size 0 - 3 months.

This size chart for a baby pants can only be an approximate guideline. Not every baby is the same. Even though the knitted baby panties may still be too big today, it's guaranteed to grow in quickly. And a second, smaller pants, knitted fast.
