Baby gloves are part of the basic equipment of every little earth citizen. Because nothing needs a baby more than warmth and love. Love gets it from the parents, for the warmth of the knitters are responsible. Which granny and which aunt does not like the little baby and above all affectionately with baby gloves.

Baby gloves are easy to knit. Probably the simplest thing at all, what to knit for babies. This can also beginners and beginners who do not swing the needles so often. Special knitting skills are not required. You should only be able to knit right and left stitches, we will show you the rest.

Our mittens fit little baby hands and can be easily enlarged at any time. Babies are different in size when they come into the world. Some are still very small, others have a considerable size, and there are still the tiny little things, the preemies. Especially those need a lot of heat. We'll show you how to knit baby gloves for all the little ones.

Material and preparation

Baby wool

For wool for mittens you should make a careful selection. Simply because baby's skin is still very tender and delicate. Coarse yarn would not be ideal. Also, you should note that the wool is not necessarily fuzzy. As soft and beautiful as a fluffy mohair yarn is, but certainly not the right one for baby's hands. The little ones take everything in the mouth, even baby gloves. Therefore, the yarn to be entangled should not be provided with protruding fibers.

There are special baby merino wool for babies. The Rico Baby Merino by Wolle Rödel is a high-quality and durable new wool yarn, specially prepared for babies. For those who do not really want a new wool yarn for the mittens, there is Rico Design Baby Classic by Wolle Rödel. A very soft yarn mixture of polyacrylic and polyamide. For wool allergy sufferers highly recommended.

And for cotton lovers there is Rico Baby Cotton Soft. A soft and easy-care cotton blend, also made by Wolle Rödel. Which yarn you prefer is entirely up to you. It should only be soft and fluffy for baby's skin.

Our yarn corresponds to the Baby Smiles Merino Wool by Schachenmayr. We used to knit this wool for baby booties. The residual wool we have now processed for the baby gloves. Our wool is awarded for needle size 3.5. However, we only knitted the mittens with the needle size 2.5 and 3.0.

Tip: Knit a small knit with your wool and different needle sizes.

So you can quickly see how the wool and the needle behave towards each other. It always depends on how firm or how easy the individual knits.

Accordingly big or small also the baby gloves.

knitting needles

We have also varied a bit this time around the needle game. You can always knit our baby gloves with every needles game. However, we decided this time for extra short needles. Since there are only very few stitches on a needle, it is easier to knit with these short needles. They have a length of 15 centimeters. In a normal needle play, the needle length is 20 inches long. The length of the needles but has no effect on the knitting, it is only about the ease of knitting.

play of colors

Of course you can knit your mittens in a variety of colors. Some like it colorful, the others unicolor monochrome.

We also embroidered a pair of gloves with a small heart. If you want to knit the baby gloves in several colors, simply change the wool color. At the end of the knitting work, you can then easily knot the two beginning threads together and then sew them together.

Your imagination is the limit!

material list

You will need this for 1 pair of baby gloves:

  • 25 grams of wool
  • 1 needlestick according to the wool thickness, preferably 2.5 and 3.0
  • 1 darning needle for sewing the threads

pattern

rib

The cuff pattern consists of:

  • 1 stitch crossed right
  • 1 stitch left
  • 1 stitch crossed right
  • 1 stitch left

In this order, the whole round is knitted. A stitch on the right is not inserted at the front but at the back. That is, by the puncture from behind the stitch is a little twisted. It gives you a little more elasticity and the cuffs do not wear out.

Handmuster

The hand you knit only with right stitches. Since you work in rounds, all stitches are only knit right. There is no second round, so always knit all the same stitches.

Knitting baby gloves (0 to 3 months)

We knitted our little baby gloves with a needle size of 2.5. These gloves are for babies who have just been born.

The cuff has an unstretched circumference of 10 centimeters, the hands have a circumference of 12 centimeters. The hand-shaped tip is 7.5 centimeters long. The cuff has a length of 4.5 centimeters.

casting on

So that the cuff is good and easily stretchable, we struck with two needles at the same time.

  • Cast on 32 stitches

After the stop, a needle can be pulled out again. The stitches are now very loose on the remaining needle.

cuffs

1st row cuffs

Only after this attack you distribute the stitches on the individual needles.

To do this, knit in the cuff pattern:

  • * 1 stitch crossed right
  • 1 stitch left *

To knit 8 stitches on each needle. Each needle ends with a left stitch. After the first round there are 8 stitches on each needle.

After knitting 8 stitches on the fourth needle, close the round of four needles.

To make this connection less noticeable, stitch the stitches together, knit on the fourth needle two more stitches from the first needle. For example, while there are 10 stitches on your 4th needle at the moment, and only 6 stitches on the first needle, after a few rounds you will simply put those two stitches from the fourth needle back onto the first needle.

2nd and following rows of cuffs

Continue knitting the cuff in the cuff pattern. Our cuff has a length of 4.5 centimeters. Of course you are free to knit the cuff as long as you want. For longer cuffs, it looks pretty when it is turned over.

Hand knit

For the hand, just continue knitting with the right stitch. With these little mittens we forego an increase. Knit 20 rounds just right stitches straight. This results in a hand length of about 5 centimeters.

Knit lace

Picture glove top

For the point of the mittens knit the round finished. The work is now in front of you, with needles 1 and 2 on the left half and needles 3 and 4 on the right half.

Round 1

Needle 1

  • Knit 6 stitches to the right
  • Knit 2 stitches (stitch 7 and stitch 8) together

Needle 2

Take the first stitch, knit the second stitch on the right. Pull the lifted stitch over this second stitch. Knit the remaining 6 stitches to the right.

Needle 3

  • Knit 6 stitches to the right
  • Knit 2 stitches together

Needle 4

Take the first stitch, knit the second stitch on the right. Lift the lifted stitch over the second stitch. Knit the remaining 6 stitches to the right. The first round of the top is ready knitted.

round 2

The second round takes place without acceptance. Knit the stitches of all four needles to the right.

Round 3

In the third round, stitches are taken again. They take off the mesh just like in round 1.

Needle 1

Knit all stitches on the right, knit the last two stitches on the right side.

Needle 2

Take the first stitch, knit the second stitch on the right. Lift the lifted stitch over the knitted second stitch. Knit the remaining stitches to the right.

Round 4

The fourth round takes place without acceptance. Knit all stitches to the right.

Round 5

You knit the fifth round just like the 1st and 3rd rounds.

Round 6

Do not take any stitches this round. Knit all stitches to the right.

Round 7 and all subsequent rounds

Each round is a round off from the 7th round.

You take as usual in these rounds on the:

  • Needle 1: knit the last two stitches together
  • Needle 2: knit the first two stitches together
  • Needle 3: knit like needle 1
  • Needle 4: knit like needle 2.

From round 7 on you take stitches every round. Until only 2 stitches are left on each needle.

Now cut off the working thread to 20 centimeters in length, thread it on a darning needle and lead the darning needle through all remaining stitches, a total of 8 stitches.

Pull the thread tight and sew it on the inside.

The first baby glove is ready. You also knit the second baby glove.

Baby Mittens (3 to 6 months)

To increase a knitting work, it is often sufficient to exchange the needles for a size larger. In other words, we worked the small mitten with 2.5 needles. However, if you knit the same size with 3.0 or 3.5 gauge needles, the baby glove will automatically grow slightly larger.

But you can also enlarge the small mittens like this:

Knit stop and cuffs

  • work with a needle size of 3.0
  • Cast on 32 stitches

Knitting the cuffs just like the little mittens. You can also knit a few more rounds at the cuff length. In the final Ribbon Round, they take 4 stitches in a divided fashion. Now the hand gets a bit bigger. To do this, knit the penultimate stitch of the round on the right, but the stitch will remain on the left needle, you will not lift it off. Now stab again in the back of the same stitch. You knitted two stitches out of one stitch. But you can also put a cross thread on the left needle from the preliminary round and knit this thread crossed (from the back to stab).

Hand knit

On each needle are now 9 stitches, total knit with 36 stitches, the hand straight. Always knit right stitches.

Knit lace

The top of the larger baby gloves knit just like the little mittens. Until there are only 5 stitches left on each needle, always knit a loose round in between. After only 5 stitches remain on the needle, knit the last round without removing. Then take off as in the small mittens in each round. Pull the last 8 stitches through the work thread and sew into the inner part of the glove.

Do not forget, also the beginning thread must be sewn.

variants

Mitten with heart

We embroidered a small heart on this mitten. The baby glove has the size 3 - 6 months. So that some variety in the glove series comes, we embroidered him.

To embroider a motive is not difficult. You draw the desired picture on a checkered piece of paper. Each box corresponds to a knitted loop. So you can embroider all motifs on the small gloves. If you look at the mesh, you will see a "V" in each stitch. Just embroider this "V".

We start the heart with the lower heart tip. To do this, stick out from the inside to the outside in the V-tip, put the stitch over it as a whole on the needle and pull the thread through. The last stitch is then again in the groove of the "V".
The second stitch comes then offset a row higher up.

Baby gloves with drawstring

In this baby glove, we knitted a small lace pattern in the first round of the hand. Through these small holes you can then draw a cord. This baby glove was knitted with a larger needle size, but the stitch count was taken from the small mittens. So the glove automatically became a little bigger.

The row of holes

To make the row of holes the same distance, add 1 stitch in the last row of cuffs. You now have a total of 33 stitches on the needles. 9-8-8-8 stitches:

  • * Knit 1 stitch on the right
  • Put 1 envelope on the needle
  • Take off 1 stitch
  • Knit 1 stitch on the right
  • Pull the lifted stitch over the right stitch. *

Exactly in this order ** knit the entire round. 1 st on the right, 1 YO, take 1 st, knit 1 stitch on the right, pull off the stitched stitch.

The second row of the hole pattern is knitted as usual with right stitches.
Simply knit the envelope as a right-hand stitch. This creates the small hole.
After this row of holes, please remove the previously added stitch. Knit two stitches together. It will not stand out. We twisted the cord with the mixer, knotted it and pulled it through the small holes in the mitten.
