An iron should not be missing in any household, because after all, the shirt and blouse are only really handsome if they are wrinkle-free. Especially steam irons enjoy great popularity, but the use of tap water can cause limescale deposits. However, the iron does not need to be disposed of when chalk clogs up the small nozzles, but can easily be cleaned at home in 30 minutes .

Ironing is a strenuous and unpopular activity, but it does not get really annoying until the steam nozzles are calcified and ugly, white spots remain on the laundry. But the device is therefore still not broken, it takes no more than half an hour to edit this problem and iron again with full steam. There are several ways to decalcify a steam iron, the ingredients are readily available in drugstores and supermarkets. How often the device must be decalcified depends on the degree of water hardness and the degree of contamination. This is easily recognizable with a view of the underside of the iron.

Home remedies and products

You need this for the descaling:

  • with citric acid:
    • a packet of citric acid
    • tap water
    • disposable cups
  • with vinegar essence:
    • a bottle of vinegar essence
  • with descaler:
    • commercially available descaling agent

Descaling with citric acid

The preparation

Empty the water tank of your steam iron completely, old water already contains lime again and would make descaling more difficult. Add 200 ml of water to a disposable cup and add two teaspoons of citric acid. Stir the mixture well so that the powder dissolves completely. Now add the lemon mixture to the tank of your steam iron and let it heat up to the highest level. The device should be as upright as possible, so that the liquid can be distributed optimally in the entire steam iron.

The decalcification
When the iron is fully heated, pour ten sprays with it. In this way, the descaler is distributed in the system and enters the hoses and nozzles of the device. Do not forget to use the spray function for fresh water at least ten times, because even here, limescale can easily be deposited. After dispensing the sprays, place the device upright on the ironing pad and leave it there for a quarter of an hour . During this time, the descaler is distributed even better in the system and dissolves the residues slowly.

After 15 minutes, heat the steam iron to its highest setting and operate the steam function at least 20 times. During this process limescale comes out of the nozzles, so you should use an old towel as a base. If lime remains after twenty sprays, let the iron stand again for five minutes and then repeat the process. You should carry this out until no more dirt and limescale particles escape from the nozzles.

Completion of the decalcification

When the steam iron is completely free of lime, you can empty the water tank and rinse it thoroughly under running water. Then fill the tank with water again and put it back in the steamer. Now let the temperature rise again and empty the entire tank via the nozzle function and the fresh water sprayer. In this way it is prevented that residues of citric acid from descaling accumulate and can pollute your laundry. Smile in between the old towel, on which you empty the steam iron. If the odor of citric acid has not disappeared after emptying the tank, refill it again and repeat the process.

When the steam iron is completely cooled and disconnected from the electricity, you still need to clean it from the outside. For this purpose, a damp cloth is sufficient, with which you remove any remains of citric acid from the bottom plate. Dry the unit well, otherwise limescale edges can quickly develop.

Descale with vinegar

The preparation

If you want to use vinegar essence to decalcify your iron, you should be extra careful about dosing. Vinegar essence is very corrosive and attacks the hoses and nozzles of the device in case of overdose. Completely empty the water tank of your iron and pour 300 ml of water into a disposable cup. Mix 25 ml of vinegar essence in the water and stir well. Then pour the mixture into the tank of your steam iron.

Tip: Essigessenz can be optimally dosed with a disposable syringe, this is available in the pharmacy.

The decalcification
Connect your steam iron to the electricity and place it upright on the ironing board. Allow the temperature to climb to maximum and then press the spray iron ten times . You should also do the same with the fresh water distributor, because dirt particles also collect here. Now allow the iron to stand upright for at least five minutes, for a maximum of ten minutes, so that the vinegar water mixture can dissolve the lime components. Then heat again to maximum level and run at least twenty puffs with the steam function and twenty puffs with the fresh water sprayer.

Be sure to put an old towel under it, because lime remains are sprayed out of the underside of your iron. If debris still comes out of the iron after twenty sprays, allow the unit to rest upright for at least five minutes. Then repeat the spraying process again. Run this through until only clear steam and water comes out of the unit. Now you can let the iron cool down and remove the tank. Empty the remaining liquid from the descaling and rinse the tank thoroughly with running water.

Completion of the decalcification

After cleaning, fill the tank with water again and attach it to the iron again. Now heat the unit a third time to the maximum temperature setting and let the entire s of the tank through the steam nozzles occur. Here, too, you should always press the fresh water regulator again and again, because here too possible residues of the vinegar mixture have settled. The water, which finally comes out of the steam nozzles should be completely odorless, so check the leaking smell in the meantime. Only when no more vinegar smell penetrates than the iron, the descaling is completely finished.

Remove the device from the power and let it cool down completely. Before the next use, it is necessary to wipe the base plate thoroughly with a damp cloth so that no residue of the vinegar solution is left. Dry the subfloor carefully with some kitchen paper.

Iron - decalcifier

The preparation

Empty the tank of your steam iron completely and prepare the descaling agent according to the packing instructions. If it is a powdered product, it must be completely dissolved in water before it is poured into the tank. Please do not mix the powder directly in the tank, it could cause clots that clog the nozzles of your steam iron.

The decalcification

Put the descaling mixture in the tank of your steam iron and place it upright against a surface or the ironing board. Turn the temperature control to maximum settings and let the steam iron heat up. Only when the highest level is reached, the actual descaling process begins. Spray ten times with the fresh water distributor and operate the steam function ten times. Then leave the appliance standing upright on the ironing board for at least ten minutes. During this time, the descaling solution can be distributed in the device. Lime deposits on hoses or in the nozzles are loosened and can then be easily removed.

After the waiting time, let the ironing machine heat up again to the maximum level and then press the steam regulator 20 times and the fresh water distribution 20 times. You will easily recognize the dirt particles that are discarded from the steam nozzles during this process. If there are any remaining residues after twenty sprays, allow the descaling agent to act again for five minutes. Now you can press the steam function again. This process should be carried out until only clear steam and water are removed from the nozzles.

Completion of the decalcification

After descaling, allow the unit to cool completely and unplug the power cord. Check whether there are any remaining particles hanging from the outside of the nozzles. Thoroughly wash the underside of the unit with a damp cloth, as this may leave residues of the descaling solution. Then dry the device well with a little kitchen towel.
